Well that's the main thing,..whether he can act or not.

I never said I want him to be the new Doctor, I just think he's a good one to put on the list of options.

Reason being is that it seems that too many people are hearing one name "David Tennant" and instantly thinking "Yeah, let's have him as the Doctor",..when there are many, many capable actors who have also proven their talent.

Being a comedian shouldn't be an obstacle as long as they are capable of acting the part.

I see many people, myself included, who have said that (Actor X) would be good because he has a quirky quality.
I'm starting to think that this isn't necesarily good criteria for selecting the actor to play the Doctor.

Because I think the most important criteria should be acting ability above all else.
An excellent actor should be able to do "quirky" if that's required.

You could get a guy who's "quirky", but it doesn't necessarily mean he's going to be good at the role if he hasn't got the range of emotions needed to play the role.

But I would like to see a lot more options available than just going for the flavour of the month, David Tennant, and just agreeing straight away.
There's lots of good actors out there, once you start thinking about it, you can come up with many, many good choices as opposed to just David Tennant.

Someone earlier in the thread mentioned David Morrisey. I can imagine him being excellent. You can really see him being a dark, angry, aggressive, edgy, moody, emotionally intense Doctor.
Like I say it's more than just being about being quirky or charming,..you might end up with a complete lightweight playing the Doctor who can't do the darker shades,....a good range is probably more important, and quirkiness and charm being just being emotions you'd expect a good actor to be able to communicate to the viewer anyway.

Oh boo! I was quite getting into the idea of Sean Pertwee. Suppose it makes sense though.

Alright then, I'll give my vote to Anthony Head. He's a good enough actor, and would probably have an interesting take on the character.

I don't want David Tennant purely because the ads for Casanova on BBC3 really annoyed me. I'm well aware that this is shallow, but I don't care.

Well, I suppose Chris regards the role of Dr Who to be like a film role, a one off - he wouldn't keep repeating the same film role over and over again would he?

How about giving the man a break? There are plenty of other possible reasons for this than the one he has given.

Maybe he had already signed another contract for a film or other series which clashes with the filming schedule for the new Dr Who series?
Lets face it, he'd have been looking for work under the assumption that there would NOT be a second series - until the BBC committed thats an assumption he'd have to make.

Maybe he is pissed off that the BBC had too little faith to commit to more than one series before the success of the first episode - maybe they finished filming and he saw something he was really quite proud of, and was annoyed that the BBC didn't see that.. its certainly possible... this could also explain why he was non-commital during his promo appearances - he didn't want to seem to keen on continuing in the role, and then looking like an arse if the BBC then decided they weren't doing a second series.

And finally, maybe to him its just a job, the same as you or I go to work every morning - i'm sure none of us would stay in a job that we really felt would hurt our career.

I'm pissed off about it, but not with the actor - not really with anyone to be honest, just pissed off because it means a new doctor - and he might be crap.

I have taken the liberty of starting a few genuine negotiations with known figures who would be ideal Doctors.

I mean, what can possibly go wrong with Boris Johnson at the controls of the TARDIS?

I agree with you to a point, but all actors run their own businesses effectively (selling themselves as the 'business' these days) and all contracts are written to reflect the fact that there may not be a second series, but if there is, we would like you to come back. This is the day of the corporate lawyer, after all.

And anyway, it's already been said that he was acting way too vague to commit to a second series in early interviews, so I don't think that applies.

Is he going to go back in time and fix two leaders of the Conservative Party?

I'm watching Casanova on BBC3 right now, purely to get a look at Mr Tennant - and BY GOD I wish I hadn't bothered.

Too scrawny and lightweight, he looks like he would simply blow away in a strong breeze. I know I said I wanted Doctor Who to be a thinker rather than a fighter, but this bloke would be hard pushed to win a fight with a corpse! And where's this alleged "sex appeal"? Sorry, but malnourished hamsters just don't do it for me. (I can't believe I called him handsome! Oh the shame. ) There is absolutely nothing special about this man that should make him such a hot favourite to be the new Doctor.

Except of course that he's pals with Russell T Davis.

Talk about an old boys network. I'm sick of Mr He Who Can Do No Wrong handing out jobs to all of his friends when there are better candidates around. I'm sure the RTD fanatics will dismiss me as a simple-minded heretic who misunderstands His vision, not that I care. I'll watch the first episode of the second series to give it a chance, but probably no more.

I think whoever the new Doctor is should not be well known. This is consistent with previous doctors. A lot of the people suggested on here I think are far to well known and I think this is detrimental to the believability of the character.

Not keen on the idea of any comedian playing the Doctor.

By the way my Dr Who screensaver came on earlier, the first time since last nights announcement and I looked at Christopher Eccles cake with contempt.

Apparently whilst filming he could not speak to any other cast or crew
until filming was over, this would suggest he took it very serious and openly admitted he found of "grueling", i had a feeling if it was popular
he would leave he seems like a guy who doesnt want to cosy down.
thats the good thing about doctor who you know @ some point youre getting a new face just happens sooner this time
mind i will miss him i dont have fancy him
is that normal i fancy dr who!!!! LOL

I'm surprised Richard E Grant is doing so bad in the BBC poll, only 2.x%! He'd be my first choice I think. I don't think he'd leg it after one series either, because, to be honest, I think he's past his Hollywood best, and isn't in the demand he was. Still a great actor though.

David Tennant seems too young, and a bit too "pretty" to be Dr Who. Although I surprised he's 33, he looks like hes in his 20s still. Perhaps in 5 years.

Bill Nighy seems too old and I can't really imagine him in the role, although he's polling surprisingly well.

David Thewlis sounds interesting, haven't seen much of his stuff though. Probably likely to "do an Eccleston" though.

Anyway, whoever it is, you need to have them in a three series contract to gain some continuity.

The BBC site mentioned Joanna Lumley as a possible new Doctor. As she's refused to reprise her role in the FTN remake of Sapphire and Steel, I think she'd make an excellent Doctor.

I'm assuming of course that in this age of equality, a time lord could quite easily be a time lady...

No she damn well can't. Dr Who is a man. As someone already mentioned on this thread, if the BBC mess with the format it will upset too many people. I suppose you think the next James Bond should be a woman as well. I know why don't we change all the actresses for actors in the next series of Desperate Housewives and call it Desperate Husbands. No? Thought not.

Well, the FTN bit was a lie. A quality channel like that would never stoop so low as to make a sci-fi series. But the bit about Joanna Lumley on the BBC site was true. Although it was only someone's suggestion on the "Have your say" bit...

But in answer to crowby1, I really do think Joanna Lumley would make an excellent Doctor(ess). I also see no reason why there couldn't be a Jamie Bond...

Both Tom Baker and Peter Davison anounced their "retirement" either just before or during a run. I know they had longer stints at the role, but it still meant we had a seaon of watching a "Dead Doc walking".

If CE wants to go, then let him go! As I have said elsewhere, the show is bigger than the star, so lets support the show!

As for the NEW new Doctor:

Although Jon Pertwee was a comic actor, he was better known on the radio than on TV at the time he took the role. HE always played the doctor fairly straight but with a light touch that only a truly good actor could achieve.

The thought of a comedian (as opposed to comic actor) playing the part sends a very unpleasant shiver down my spine.

As for REG ("they loved me in Withnail & I")- no thanks, we've already had one luvvy in the TARDIS this millennium (although CE does play the part well).

Casanova - I don't know, I really don't know. Seems a good actor but...

Anthony Head? Thought he'd be good ever since I started watching BTVS - he's just so British!

Alan Davies? Perhaps it's just the Jonathon Creek perm, but I do think he could pull it off (the part, that is, not the perm )

Mark Benton? Doctor Who, Doc Marten, Dock of the Bay, Dock Leaf - not an inspired choice IMHO.

Sorry if this has rambled - it's way past beddy-byes time.

The Doctor's next travelling companion for the second series of Doctor Who was cast yesterday. As mooted back in March, the Three Who Rule (the three Executive Producers, Russell T. Davies, Mal Young and Julie Gardner) have chosen Glamour Model and Singer Katie Price aka Jordan.

Russell T Davies has said that Katie will play the part of a Barbarian Queen, who is saved by the Doctor from evil stone statues that come to life on a tropical island. Outgoing assistant Billie Piper has said "..... Katie is an amazing actress, and will be an asset to the show." When asked how her character Rose was to leave the show, Billie replied " The Autons make a return, and during a fight with Katie's character I lose my life. Well you know how they can control plastic ........"

All this news on the first day of April, it will be interesting to see what else pops up.

Or the next Charlies's Angels film to have men in the leading roles? Or the new Wonder Woman film?

The Doctor is a Timelord , not a Timelady. He had Timeladies as his companions in the Tom Baker years, but they don't change sex!

If you wanted to make it believable, you should have realised Mal Young no longer works for the Beeb.

As for Mark Benton, I think he would be better off as the Master - he was very evil in 'The Second Coming'

As for a woman Doctor, I don't see why not. If human males can become female (TG) why not Timelords? My choice to play a female Doc - Kathy Burke.
