Although I missed the first episode of the new series (and actually have never seen an episode in my life).Eccleston was what attracted me to want to see the new episode. I am going to watch the second one (I am hoping its not a continuing story) and see what I think of it all. I am quite surprised though that he has decided to quit after only one show being broadcast.

Has anyone else noticed a pattern here?

The first episode of the new series leaked onto the internet early...

Does anyone else think that this story leaked out two days early?

If you have to think about it, check your calenders for Friday's date!

I'm glad Billie Pipers staying on. She was good in the first episode.

Think David Tennat would be quite good as the new Dr Who, and he's just been in Casanova which was written by Russell Davis as well.

Shame though that Eccleston announced it just after the 1st episode though, puts a bit of a dampner on it all really

Maybe there is a method in this madness. The series launch has been helped by having a credible actor in the lead role, it may have received a more lukewarm reception with someone such as David Tennant from Casanova. As hes an unknown perhaps he would be happier about signing on for more series. I guess when Eccleston leaves as long they maintain the same ethos and don't screw up to badly with his replacement, it can carry on to be a success.

No, one TV movie (Paul McGann), and I'm not counting his audio adventures.

but the same thing will happen. Any actor with massive ambition (and most do) will not stick around for more than one series.

Oy! don't take the piss!

Admittingly, he would be a silly doctor but I think it was the quirkiness she was going on about.

He has the quirkiness that would work with the doctor but aside from that I think he'd not do very well.

He's already played it (twice), so whether that means he would jump at the chance again or not go near it with a barge pole is up to him.

I wonder if "almost" 9th Doctor Bill Nighy would accept or would him being second choice put him off?

I also rather like Chris Langham in the role.

Strictly speaking Paul McGann has been Dr Who for about 7 years. OK he only appeared once but until hes been replaced hes still the Doctor.

Bill Nighy is quite a good suggestion really...

David Tennant is too wimpy to play Dr Who. Bill Nighy would be great.

Always loved CE and am shocked at his departue.

There's no way you would get one without the other, you would have to have two Doctors.

releasing this information now has put a dampner on the series. its a series now flawed by the fact he isnt going to be around for long! and as someone else said, dr who only has so many number of lives unless they had....SON OF DOCTOR WHO! lol

A dampner is a very good description

Really disappointed to hear about Chris quitting the show! Thought he might have done at least 2 more series first...

Just hope he will do the regeneration scene in the Christmas Special, and that the replacement stays on for atleast 3 years.

I'll still continue to watch the show - I won't let this put me off!

Nothing new but this is what the BBC said

Quote:
“Actor Christopher Eccleston has quit as Doctor Who after just one episode of the new series, the BBC has confirmed.

Eccleston, whose first appearance as the Doctor on Saturday attracted around 10 million viewers, is leaving at Christmas as he fears being typecast.

Talks are taking place to replace him with Casanova star David Tennant.

The BBC has commissioned a second, 13-part Doctor Who series, which will again be written by Russell T Davies and feature Billie Piper as Rose.”

As this about Billie Piper been confirmed. Also if they is no regeneration of the Dr in this new series the BBC can make it so that Chris is not a true Dr, some sort of renegade thats get fund out in the Xmas version by the new true Dr who..

Just an idea... anyway...

very strange indeed really.

after all the hype recently, and him bigging the whole thing up about how he really wanted to do it, and then to quit already - as mentioned already, after only one ep has been aired it does kind of put a dampener on the whole thing.

if we already know he's leaving, where is the incentive for us an audience to invest interest and emotion into his character?

rubbish, frankly.

The thing is, being more of a casual viewer (I sky+ it and watch it on Sunday), I actually think its a good idea for him to leave as it will keep the show fresh and the interest in the second series higher than it would have been.
However my problem is that they have leaked it SO soon! they could have at least waited till they were ready to start filming the second series they have kind of ruined it for me now

A terrible one in my opinion. Implausible plot twists were a big part of what got Dr Who axed last time.

That's what contracts are for.

It's also an outrage that the news came out via an interview with the anti-BBC Sun.

Especially so early in the show. It will cost it viewers and may finish it forever.

I'm really disapointed by this and hope CE does change his mind about it after he sees people sreactions and agrees to do at least one more series. I really don't think it's fair that someone can leave after one series like this, especially as it looks like they asked for the role.

The contracts should have been written to commit them to several series if the they were made and if they were wanted, not the other way round as it seems (where the actors could stay on for several series if they wanted even if the production team didn't want them).

As for the next Doctor...I'm not sure about either of the suggestions in this thread. I don't know enough about the Cassanova guy, but Bill Nighy would be a complete turn off for me. I really don't like the guy as an actor and he seems all wrong for Doctor Who, I think if he got the role Doctor Who would quickly be put back on the shelf again for many years.

Casanova star David Tennant,

He may be a good Dr and hopefully he will stay a bit longer that a season. Good on Billie staying, so far she was very good and far better that any body would have guessed.
