I didn't have a clue what you meant then.
I was reading my sentence you quoted, again and again, and didn't understand what you were on about,...then I noticed my schoolboy error.

Yeah I agree this is quite a blow for the fans, and to announce it just after episode one, it kind of poo poos the whole hype surrounding the series.

Hopefully, the next actor can stick around - and thankfully, as the Dr can regenerate, its an easy way to re cast the role.

Shame about Christopher Eccleston leaving so soon, wonder how his buddy Russell T Davies feels about his decision. You can only imagine there's more to this story than has surfaced so far.

CONTENDER FOR THE NEXT DOCTOR
Now it may be a little too early in his career as he seems to be attempting to crack America these days, but my suggestion for a future Doctor is Steve Coogan. He's got a great range (he's a lot more than just 'Alan Partridge') and he's a fan of the show - plus he's VERY British... I'm sure he'd "get" what the role is about.

I never thought about him.

Steve Coogan sounds like an excellent option.

How about Alan Davies.Hes a bit madcap,a great Dr. Who.

How about Mark Benton? Of course, the fact he appeared in the first episode might have scuppered his chances somewhat

I saw Charles Dance in something reasontly and thought he wold have made a good doctor, although he probably a bit long in the tooth now and maybe alittle on the serious side

They mentioned Eddie Izzard on the radio. I'd be happy with him.

Was no problem for Colin Baker was it?

I think he was someone who was there in the episode before he regenerated, playing a different character,..then when the new series started...lo and behold...he was the new Doctor.

So yeah, why not Mark Benton on the list of options?

I think it was silly of BBC not to sign him up for a contracted 2 or 3 series. The US standard is 5 seasons isnt it? I do hope the next one is contracted to at least 2 seasons, need some stability....and not someone too young as the Doctor needs to have a bit of maturity...

Eccleston was good - time to move on.

I do believe he has been somewhat cowardly in not accepting further series - you don't see that fine thespian Patrick Stewart complaining about typecasting after seven series and a couple of movies as Jean Luc Picard. So that one doesn't hold water.

Personally, I'd rather they dumped the dumpy chav.

A replacement, I'd like Alan Davies - but for a real change, Eddie Izzard.

Does The Doctor have to be British?

Just thought - elderly doctors, in the past, have been very good. So I'd like to throw in :

Richard Wilson

(One Foot in the Grave)

Can you imagine?

CE very silly move, should have stayed for the next series at least.

Hahahahahaha!

Hmmm that might work. Maybe.

I'm very annoyed I haven't even seen the first episode yet as I was in Hong Kong, and then the bloke buggers off. Maybe the beeb and other uk tv producers will start to insist on mandatory five year contracts like they do in the US. So that they have the upper hand rather than actors when it comes to big shows.

If the show had failed, CE would have been happy to have said that he wanted to move on. Now after the 10 million viewers tuned in, the first series is complete he decides to call it a day.

Jane Tranter Head of Commissioning drama confirmed yesterday that his contract included an option to do further series. I think CE is seeing pound signs before his eyes. "Sell" your story to the Scum, more publicity for the show and turn around to the BBC and say "I will do another series but only for £xxx, xxx fee."

Personally I wouldnt mind a new Doctor especially if the regeneration were to take place in a Christmas Special. If I were RTD I would love to do a 2 part story and dump CE at the end of the first part, giving the viewers a chance to get to know the new Doctor before the second series starts.

I think it's a good thing - bear in mind that for people that haven't seen it before it will be much easier to see a transfer to another Doctor after just one season, otherwise people would have got too used to him and wouldn't like the idea of anyone else.

Well, the show has always been the STAR in the past and it'll go on. Heard that David Tennant is a possible new Doctor. He stars as Casanova next week, it was on BBC 3. Could be a vg Doctor!!

He was the copper in Blackpool.

Yet another amazing series shown on BB2 last year

/makes mental note to add that to *DVD wish list*

Seems to me CE completely failed to appreciate just how massive this is. It's surprised me that it's become so big and I've been watching it since 1970. Maybe it spooked him. Troughton, Pertwee & Davision didn't get typecast so that seems a bit weak as a reason. It's the sheer scale of the role in the public imagination and the "stop your life for 9 months" thing.

Still, enjoy his contribution and move on. No one is going to be bound by some notional regeneration limit which was a minor plot point 30 years ago.

I've not seen Casanova but David Tennant was fantastic in Blackpool. The right blend of quirky but serious. He kept me glued to the set to see what he would do / say next and that's what the Doctor role is all about.

You can't cast a comic in the role unless you want it to be a send up. REG would be the other obvious choice.

Maybe make a virtue out of the necessity and only ever have the Doctors for one series - a regeneration at the end of each run.

Who else just stuck around for one series?
Where is the commitment? Always seemed to me like he just wanted to do it for the sake of it... hence calling up his writer friend when he heard about it... maybe they should've just let someone else roll with it and have at least some sort of consistency. Whats it gonna be, a new doctor per series now?
