This isn't just about madonna at this point. Radio 1 needs to abolish it's ageist stance. They got away with it with Robbie and Kylie but I hope there is a large backlash against them with Madonna.

I tried explaining this earlier in the thread to the people who kept calling Madonna fans all the names under the sun but those who are seemingly supporting Radio One over this think its all Madonna fans when a simple search shows its more than that.

The way the likes of Radio 1 seem to snub anyone over 30 is ageism full stop and it's totally indefensible. Shame on them, it's disgusting.

I listen to radio 2 and she's getting airplay on there so I will stick with them as imo they play more of the music that I like.

I haven't listened to radio one in years.

Really?

I saw it three times this morning on three different channels. It was definitely played on MTV Hits and VH-1, the third channel I can't remember as it was already playing when I switched it on and I wasn't in the mood to hear the song again so changed the channel. lol

So you completely took what I said out of the context of my point. I don't expect them to play every new release by every artist however I do expect them to represent the entire chart not just who they deem as relevent, otherwise they shouldn't have the rights to the official chart countdown.”

Songs normally get playlisted on R1 before they hit the charts.

R1's daytime shows do by and large play nothing but mainstream chart music, hence my comment about them not playing avant garde classical on Grimshaw's show.

You seem to be stuck between accepting that there are limits on what they can play but still expect them to represent the entire chart. There's no way they can playlist (i.e guarantee regular plays) all the songs in the chart. They make a decision based on a number of issues, including deciding to promote UK artists (they claim 40% of the music they play is by UK artists).

I actually think their reasoning (as it has been expressed thus far) on the Madonna issue is a bit vague and bizarre, but this is just one song and any reason they offer will be up for debate to some extent.

I don't really care about who has the official chart show (as i personally think that's had its day and probably also largely inaccurate these days) but not playing every single act from the charts on their shows is no reason to strip R1 of the chart rundown.

Was it on Kerrang? oh wait it isn't relevant to that channel...but Madonna is relevant, better start the protests

She had a nice run.

Madonna is hardly the first, or last, artist to get dissed by a radio station for not fitting into their percieved demographic.

Also, I don't think any of the singles from MDNA were playlisted - if I recall her last single to be playlisted was Miles Away, so this isn't anything new.

One song that I have heard from Rebel Heart is GhostTown which is fab. I hope this is going to be a single.

It's strongly rumoured to be the next single. Infact, if it ISN"t the next single, I will officially lose al faith in her management.

It will be a single. Jonas is already lined up to shoot the video. Rumour has it that she may even perform the song partially at the Brits.

So I guess this'll be the second song for Jonathan Ross (and the French show?)?

According to drownedMadonna, they have a superb album review, Ghosttown was solely written by Madonna! Can anyone clarify that?

I read she will perform Living For Love and Ghosttown on Jonathan Ross so that does hint its the second single.

I think this is her first real ballad single release since 1998s Power Of Goodbye?? as I'm not sure if Miles Away could be classed as one and What It Feels Like For A Girl had the dance remix version for its video release so falls somewhere in the middle.

Ghosttown is one of the best songs Madonna has released in her career. It's the only song from Rebel Heart I've downloaded so far. I won't be downloading the whole album as I'm really not keen on tracks like Bitch I'm Madonna, and whilst it's not officially been released yet S.E.X. is dreadful regardless of what the final version ends up sounding like.

Madonna knew this was going to happen, as someone else said, it's the final chapter of her legay in full swing.

The only reason why I don't agree with this statement: Don't radio make singers/groups relevant by playing them?
Radio One doesn't have to playlist everyone, that's perfectly fine with me if they don't play Madonna's new song, but the "relevant" reasoning bothers me.

I've missed ballad Madonna and i'm thrilled she's returned! Masterpiece was a massive step in the right direction (and was the highlight of MDNA!), so i'm glad she's finally committed! (WIFLFAG and Miles Away are two of her weakest singles, so i'd say they don't count as proper ballads. The only thing that saved WIFLFAG was the A&B remix and the brilliant video )

Although I am getting slightly annoyed that album release is only a few weeks away and we still haven't got confirmed track listing.

The question of what makes a particular song relevant is an interesting one. Is it audience led or dependant more on label/media promotion? A style has to be popular, but popularity isn't the only determining factor. I think relevance is an understandable consideration in the selection process, but it's fraught with difficulties.

Radio 1 must understand they only have a very slight influence over what styles of music are considered relevant these days. I'd imagine they're more often than not attempting to construct a playlist that captures what is relevant rather than what may be if they throw their weight behind it (although they do have a playlist for young UK artists, although how inventive and different these artists are is up for debate).
