New Homechoice box on its way?
TheNinjaPirate
31-03-2005
Whilst in conversation with HC about a problem with their VOD service (see my other post), one of the CS bods told me they had a new box in the pipeline with phono outputs on it. yay!!!! Anyone else heard anything about it? Release date? Be great if they got it together to make a PVR type box, but given their VOD service I guess this is unlikely?

The engineer who visited me mentionned a new box - slightly alrger with a fan in it possibly.

It seems that the current boxes suffer from an overheating problem - god only knows how this will manifest itself duringthe heat of summer!

It DEFINITELY overheats. A lot. I had it stuffed into a fairly small space on top of a VCR at one point and it was crash city. I moved it on top of the TV and now it only crashes occasionally. On radio 1 mostly.

My box runs very cool and has never crashed since getting the service last Summer. Probably helps that it's not sitting on top of any other equipment and has free space on all sides.

I had an engineer visited me as well and he said the new box should be come into place in 3 months' time.
My box now isn't just overheat, it makes noise as well!!! Well a slight pitch and I often turn the button off before bedtime.

That's what my last box was doing - a high pitched whine. It then gave up the ghost for a while and was only recovered after a long power-down (Days not minutes!)

The box was replaced and the new one didn't make the noise - for a few days

Mine box has just gone for the second time with that telltale squealing noise followed by a complete inability to display any telly.

Though strangely I still have a working internet connection this time.....

Let's hope the new box is on its way fairly quickly

pissedbob: That's exactly what my box did. The replacement is now squealing a little

mine overheated as well - or at least i think that's what happened. Took a week to get another ( but thats wasn't homechoices fault ) i hope a new box is coming and i hope it looks good, like the current one

Yep, my second box died last night. The usual squealing, random flashing blue/red light. No TV but internet works still. Coming to replace it on Tuesday, which isn't bad.

Mine crashed twice last night too. Not looking good is it. Box number three here I come.

Do you think that they send out 'graded' stock when they send a replacement?

When my last box was replaced, the engineer said that they had been 'stripped out' and rebuilt due to their unreliability. So I guess it was a refurb of sorts....

They have always struck me as looking like my O level Technology project! Doesn't really look like a consumer product, so my expectations were pretty low. Other than the constant crashing when it was in a confined space it has been relatively OK, although it often freezes about a minute into Radio 1.

Since l moved house at the beginning of Jan. My stb has had it's own shelf under the telly. No probs with overheating.

Will everyone be getting the new box when it is released?

The CS bod seemed to be saying that all HC customers would receive the new box when it was released.
