Moto G 2014 Lollipop
Both my kids have the Lollipop update waiting for their 2014 Moto G but given lollipops battery life crapness on my Nexus 5 i am very reluctant to tell them to go ahead with it.
Anyone else bit the bullet and does it also sort out the memory problems? |

Here is a recent test on upgrading Moto G 2nd Gen to Lollipop. (Moto X, Samsung Galaxy G5 and LG G3 are also tested.)
http://www.techspot.com/article/961-...ife/page4.html That shows that battery life increases of between -10% and +5%. The decreases were with an earlier Lollipop release and may have been due to mishandling the second SIM. I gather that some work items in the minor releases since Lollipop was first released have been addressing battery issues. CPU gets about a 5% lift. The worst case battery life decrease was 10%. I intend to upgrade my Moto G 2nd Gen this evening, after I've done a backup. -- Pete Forman http://petef.22web.org/payg.html |

I did it in the end anyway, both are very happy, cant comment on the battery but they both agree the phone feels even better.

I've upgraded my Moto G 2nd Gen to Lollipop / Android 5.0.2. There was only one niggle.
Google Play services kept on nagging me to upgrade but then failing to do so. Its version was 6.7.74 and the new one 6.7.76. I successfully updated a couple of other apps after loading Lollipop. "Google Play services could not be downloaded due to an error (944)" In time honoured IT tradition I cycled power on the phone and then the update succeeded. -- Pete Forman http://petef.22web.org/payg.html |

In all fairness Motorola have been testing it for months, you could freely sign up to it.

When GSMArena did their testing, it was surprising how battery life changed between KitKat and Lollipop in different modes like web browsing, watching videos and making calls.
Also, when I talked to Motorola tech support, they said I had two chances to reject the Lollipop update before it forced you to accept it, true or false? |

I've not found any problems with 5.0.2 since getting it last week, bar the launcher (Google Now in my case) still restarting quite frequently which is a bit of an annoyance.
I do think launchers should never be shut down to free up space, no matter what. It's a perception thing, and obviously gives masses of ammunition to the fanboys. Some Moto G (single SIM) versions got Lollipop very quickly, in keeping with Motorola's recent track record on updates, but the issues that forced out 5.0.1 and now 5.0.2 did trigger this delay, so hopefully Motorola only signed it off once almost all issues were fixed. This is why Android 5.0.x has been slow to appear on other handsets too, despite most companies promising quicker updates (knowing that not doing so will put people off, as HTC discovered a while back when an awful lot of long-term loyal users got really annoyed). |

The Motorola forums reported this today for the 2013 Moto G 3G; All users with Retail GB and the following Sim Locked devices (Retail EU (Ireland), SFR, Tesco GB, Vodafone GB, Everything Everywhere GB, and O2 GB) can download and install Android 5.0.2.
but not for the G 4G yet.

I don't think it should be too long until 5.1 comes to these phones. The delay last time was mostly due to stopping the rollout until 5.0.2 was released.
US models had got 5.0 quickly and there were various issues so everything paused. It's not been much better for Nexus owners. |

Google reports that 5.1 supports (High Definition voice calling is now on your mobile phone) VoLTE on compatible phones, but which ones?

My 1st gen moto g updated with this last week, there is some bug where the battery drains in 8 hours, its the google play services checking location constantly, i disabled location services and fully charged its saying battery life 3 days left, this bug needs sorted though, i shouldn't need to disable stuff to keep it working.

My Nexus 5 was losing battery so fast under 5.0.1 i was having to charge it 3 times a day, it was losing 10% per hour just sat there. Anyway rest assured under 5.1 its fixed and its lasting much much longer, in the last 9 hours it has lost 6% so massive improvement.
Hopefully 5.1 will be out for the Moto G soon because it is much, much better. |

Do you have to back up photos and contacts on the phone or can you just update straight off?

I'm one to avoid so called upgrades, but not having returned off all the advanced google settings that you don't really need often accounts for a decrease
