What type of email is it (POP3, IMAP etc) - the standard android email will do most formats.

Popular alternatives are aqual-mail or k9-mail available on Playstore.

I recommend BlueMail, it works POP and IMAP accounts, is free and very effective.

Does K-9 email allow you to keep a copy on your ISP's server? I ask this because, while on holiday, I was using Outlook.com to download my ntlworld (Virgin Media) emails. However, when I got home no emails would download from VM until I disabled Outlook.com. Then, although new emails came through, nothing that was received via Outlook.com ever re-downloaded through VM. I ended up having to forward everything from Outlook.com to my ntlworld email address.

Yes it does.

I think it asks when you set up an email account. If not go to the relevant email account inbox and it's under Menu (three dots)-->Settings-->account settings-->fetching mail

The Gmail app can access email from your ISP too.
