Do user-unlocked android phones still get updates?

Hi all,

I just bought the Galaxy note 4 on Vodafone but I will need to unlock it to use with 3.

My question is, if I get the phone unlocked will I still continue to receive android updates when Vodafone releases them? If not, will I have to do it manually? If I do it manually will I always have to use the Vodafone firmware?

I am worried that once i get the phone unlocked I won't get any updates

Thanks in advance.

You will still get them, they will be the Vodafone firmware.

Is this the case even if he keeps the 3 sim card on his phone the whole time? Also, does the way that you unlock the phone (buying unlock code online vs using phone shops) effect things?

The sim won't make a difference, the phone would even update without sim IIRC.

I'm not sure of the current unlocking procedures for the Note 4, if it's like other Samsungs and needs rooting to unlock (the way many shops would unlock) it might cause a problem, codes won't.

He could always just flash back to stock after unlocking if it does need rooting and OTA would then work (if there was a problem).

Thanks for the explanation. I'm going to try to unlock without rooting as I don't want to cause any issues which may prevent updates in the future. Hopefully there is a website which sells unlock codes

Can't you just ask Vodafone? Probably the easiest way to get it unlocked.

I can't as I'm not a Vodafone customer. I bought the phone pre-owned on Amazon

If it does turn out that you need Vodafone for a future OTA, why not get a Vodafone PAYG SIM at the time?

You don't, I have had many OTA updates on previously locked network handsets with other SIM cards in use.
