Dave Grohl is seen as some sort of Rock God these days and they seem to be one of those bands where people gasp in shock if you don't like them. I just can't get into the sound of the music or his voice at all. Have they inherited all the following that Nirvana had?

I'm not keen. They're very one-dimensional – all thud and blunder with lots of shouting and very little substance.

I love the Foos but they're not for everyone, no need to worry about it or anything.

I don't agree about them being one dimensional and lacking in substance though; some of their more mellow stuff is surprisingly melodic and Dave Grohl is really good at adapting his voice depending on what style of song he sings.

I'm not a fan. I'm not really into rock music (more a pop/electronica/dance sort of person) and I know people will hate me for that but it's a style of music I could never warm to.

I've not really listened to them since wasting my money on In Your Honor. The first three albums are good though.

Did you create this thread with good intentions OP?

Casual fan here, i'd kill to see them in concert though, Dave really puts on a hell of a show what from what I see. They sell out stadium shows in seconds so I guess they're doing something right, to each there own

Well I'm glad someone said this. I like Dave Grohl fine and I love the documentaries etc. but the music of the Foo Fighters is nearly always disappointing. There is too much thunder about it and the melodies are just not that strong.

No can't stand them, as much as I would like to having been a massive Nirvana fan.

They get a lot of goodwill because Dave is such a genuinely great guy. Musically they peaked early with 'Color and Shape' album - a damn fine album. Since then the music has gone downhill and become a tad safe maybe.....although it's still cool to see a genuine rock bands get mainstream play in this day and age. Let's be honest anyone would take the Foos over bloody Nickelback!!

I'd kill to see them live as well. Hoping their Glasto set is televised in full.

But then, like most things in music, it's horses for courses. Not everyone likes everyone else i suppose. I'd like Dave to be my dad though

Got to be honest, I know nothing about them and had to google them to hear a couple of their songs.

Not my cup of tea so it's impossible to know whether they're any good as it's a genre I would never choose to listen to.

As for people gasping in shock if you don't like them, I'd imagine most people I know would be more likely to say 'who?'

Don't really see why they're such a big deal and why Grohl is positioned as a modern day rock superstar. Kinda shows how the genre has fallen.

Plus, is it true that they are AIDs deniers?

I like them, they only seem to have about 2 decent songs per album but you can really feel how much they love making music and playing live. And dave grohl is awesome.

If memory serves, that whole issue was no more than 'guilt by association' and, following internet logic, because they haven't publicly declared their position either way since then some people still believe they are.

I like them. I don't think their popularity can solely be put down to Nirvana since the two bands have very different styles. Foo Fighters is more light-hearted and nowhere near as dark.

I think Dave Grohl's personality and sheer passion for music certainly adds to their appeal.

Of course! I didn't say anything about the music or that they were overrated. Basically that they're not my cup of tea.

Never heard of that. What is an AIDS denier anyway? Surely not someone who denies it exists.

Couple of early singles were good, but for many years now they've been pumping out nothing but bland stadium rock clangers.

Apparently, the "deniers" claim that HIV doesn't cause AIDS despite a mountain of scientific evidence proving otherwise.

One of the more notable people was Christine Maggiore who used to encourage HIV positive mothers not to undergo treatment. Her 3 year old died from untreated AIDS

Maggiore herself also died after contracting HIV, although, to be fair, there's no definitive proof it was HIV-related

I didn't realise rock bands were supposed to declare their position on Aids. I must look up Deep Purples policy document on the subject.
