Neutralising hatred and taking the fear out of extreme views is very important. Satire is, most of all, inclusive. It brings rational, reasonable people together and acts as a positive force.

Hopkins has no such positive purpose. Her love of self-publicity is her driving force. She has no interest in positive outcomes or generating positivity or inclusiveness, just attention. So yes, she can rightly be accused of hate-speech. Lazy, poorly constructed, trite, ignorant, tragically unimaginative hate-speech it may be (and that's why I find her so easy to dismiss) but it is nevertheless hate-speech.”

Hi Viva, yes your post has helped thank you. I enjoy many comedians and satirists particularly Stewart Lee but then I also enjoy Ricky Gervais who some think is offensive too. And I love reading Private Eye. I was trying to balance this out in my head with what Hopkins has said particularly some of her more infamous quotes debated here on the forum.

However, if you don't mind me quoting you I think this..

"Good satire comes from an intelligent understanding of the issue it is satirising and has care and commitment behind it and a positive purpose."

...helps me to distinguish what is good satire and what is bad satire a little better. Going back to Hopkins then she fails to show an intelligent understanding of the issue and her comments fail to take you on such a journey.

Im still unfortunately struggling to balance what Hopkins says with 'freedom of speech'. Which is why I brought up the issue of satire re: religions and that being considered appropriate. I think there was a post by Flora in which she discusses these issues very well and then she went on to post another post about what her boyfriend thinks which was the opposite...

I haven't had time to read and consider all the rest of the comments on the thread yet. But will do. I think things have move forward in the timeline of the thread... So thanks Viva.

I would also like to add (not directed at you Viva but in general re: forum discussion) - that I know people have really strong opinions on here...

However, in life there is 'magnolia' and 'grey'. I have strong opinions about lots of things but sometimes I can see a good argument for both sides of the coin. To be told that 'if you don't understand now, you never will' is something I don't associate with.

I believe there is always a place for reflecting on your own opinions and looking more deeply into other's opinions. Even if you absolutely despise what that person is saying.

There is nothing wrong with taking the time to understand peoples perspectives better. And I think, if you can take a little bit of time and patience to do just that then you may learn something new. Your may reflect on your own opinion and change it. You may not. But you won't know if you chose to remain in your own little thought bubble.

Im sorry if that frustrates anyone. I am still deciding if I am 'cut out' for this forum

[quote=Red-Eye;77179642]You'll find I've linked to the religious leaders too. They are condemning I honestly don't know what else you want them to do? Buy a giant Parade Float and make a song and dance about it?

And quite frankly I find it rather sad they even have to condemn it in the first place when they have nothing to do with it. The 3 Muslim Chapel Hill victims were killed by an angry gun toting Anti-Thiest Atheist (over a bloody stupid parking dispute apparently) but no one expects all Atheists to come out and condemn this atrocity are they?

I fail to see how this(BIB) is the same, unless the killers claimed to be doing it in the name of Atheism ?
These terrorists are killing in the name of Islam, If I was religiously inclined and someone was using my religion in such a way, I would do all I could to make sure people are aware that my religion does not condone that kind of thing.

I do see your other points, I didn't see the religious leaders one, sorry for that.
I do understand your point that yes they are condemning it, maybe it just doesn't get reported enough on mainstream news.

I live in the 5th most populous city in the USA, and, in my experience, it is not being reported in the mainstream media here. Unfortunately, if moderate muslims and leaders are speaking out here, that should be reported in the general media imho. If it can only be found on google, then I'm afraid that many people, here in my region of the world, will be uninformed that it is happening as I would venture to guess (and this is only a guess), most people here don't look to google for their news.

I do not think it is required of the muslim community to condemn the terrorists, but I believe it would go a long way toward trust on both sides.

That's a good question Anne, one I have no answer to.

You both managed to find links straight away, yet I bet none or few of them made it to mainstream media where it might actually hit home with the right people. ( although I'm not so sure it would hit home.)

Most mainstream media has an ignorant and destructive "right wing" agenda?

I'm not convinced on that one to be honest, there have also been stories in the uk that haven't been reported for fear of reprisals.
These involved attacks on white people by muslims in the uk, it wasn't even classed as a racially motivated incident. (I'll search for the link but it was a few months ago. )

The media report whatever suits their agenda at the time.

I don't think the media ever provides the whole truth at any time.

My point is people don't automatically assume ALL Atheists are guilty do they? In fact even the way it was reported the news was quick to humanise the scumbag! "Oh look he posted a video of a cute widdle puppy days before!" I don't give a shit he killed 3 innocent people FFS! To be frank had this scumbag been a Muslim and killed 3 innocent Atheists over something as stupid as a Parking spot, you honestly think the Media would still attempt to humanise him like that? No! They'd scream terrorist, have ridiculous headlines like "Parking Jihad" and demand every single Muslim on earth apologise for it! It's this type double standard which drives me nuts!

Ah thank you Lynzee. Appreciate that. Sometimes you do wonder when you post if you are just speaking a load of rubbish to people who think that you are speaking a load of rubbish! I lose track of myself and my own thoughts sometimes...

Hit the 40 this year so might be that
