Quad core,
LTE 800 / 1800 / 2600 (Bands 3, 7, 20), LTE Cat4 150/50 Mbps
It's not bad for that price new.

It is indeed a good phone for the price, I bought one when they were £90 and paid £2 for it unlocking, It was originally going to just be a back up phone but after having a mess about (and replacing the horrid launcher with go launcher) found it very fast especially at the price it was vs what else was around,
Ended up giving my mother it to replace a LG P880 as although on paper the P880 should of been more powerful and faster the Kestrel was vastly faster,
Turned out in the end it was LGs last ever update for the phone crippled it and replacing with CM12 sped it back up but in the end my mother decided she liked the kestrel better.

I cant see it ever getting any OS updates (unless we see some AOSP/CM updates for it) but at £49 if you can live having a few android behind id recommend people to snap them up

Ash

OP did you actually buy the phone for £49 or did you just see it on the display for £49 the reason I asked this is because after reading this thread I grabbed my coat put on my hat and made the bus in seconds flat and made my way to Asda.

After checking the display I noted they never had the Kestrel so sad face I scan the shelf and all is not lost because there is a Sony Eperia E3 there for £50 on EE and o2 or £40 on Vodafone so as I can’t believe this price I took the buy me card to the checkout counter to check the price where I was told it was £80. There were a few other 4G phones at what appeared to be fantastic prices but after this I just had to walk and stop wasting my time.

After taking them to task about having the wrong price on the shelves they came over to check and nearly every phone there had an incorrect price next to it or incorrect model and make label and as the dummies are bolted to the shelf it’s not costumers that have been moving them around.

Mobiles on Asda web site are more or less nonexistent and the state of their shelves in the real World I realise why these supermarkets are finding times hard.

The Huawei Ascend Y550 is available at CPW for £34.99 as a PAYG upgrade (if you have an eligible SIM). £44.99 if not, which I think seems a reasonable price.
Cannot comment on the handset quality etc. but was thinking of ordering one as an additional 4G device to test VO2 4G coverage rollout and maybe speed, alongside my 5s on EE4G.

Thanks for coming back lee and confirming but since seff said about the Ascent Y550 above I thought I give that a shot but I would have rather of had the Kestrel as it has a better screen but then again I only want a cheap 4G phone to put in the boot of the car to use as a data connection for live traffic on my Tom-Tom and to use as a personal mobile wifi hot-spot so I’m sure the Y550 will be fine.

That said I’ve not had much luck getting hold of one of these cheap 4G phones, what with my Asda saga last night and today in the Carphonewarehouse shop?

I did not want to order the phone online with the free next day delivery because I did not want to be waiting in for it to come tomorrow so I made my way to a local shop.

When I arrive and see the PAYG display in the shop I see the Y550 is priced at £79.99p on EE plus the top up and I’m thinking now “has the CPW been taken over by Walmart”, so anyway I go to the counter and ask if they are still doing the “Half Price PAYG 4G phones” as I thought the offer finishes on the 28th of Feb and the sales person says “who’s doing PAYG 4G phones for half price” and I reply “why you our” and he says he knows nothing about it so I just said never mind I’ll order it on line and again I walked the walk.

So this saga has cost the CPW a £10 delivery charge all because their shop staff cannot be assed to look on their computers to see what I was talking about but at the time I had to give him the benefit of the doubt because it might have been an online only offer but I now know its not
