Mobile Phone Return?
Angela R

Hi,

I bought a phone from Carphone Warehouse on Saturday. I asked if I would get 4g and was told "yes" but I've since found out that I will only get 3g. The network provider is talkmobile.

What are my rights? I presume I have to do something quickly? I signed a contract but obviously I would like to cancel that now. I've used some texts and a little bit of data - what will happen with that?

Also, I will still need a new phone but CW/Talkmobile have got my PAC code - what can I do there?

Any advice gratefully received!!

You are lucky, Talkmobile have a 14 day return period. Take it back.
You'll have to speak to Talkmobile to either cancel the port or issue another PAC for you to use asap.

Thanks. And will I have to pay for texts/data used? I've hardly used it to be honest.

You are liable for use, and I would stop using it if you intend returning it as they do say excessive use can prevent a return.

Thank you for your advice. I'm going to take it back this evening. It's just so annoying that I was told it was 4g only to find that talkmobile don't do 4g. And now I've stopped my old contract, I'm left without a mobile!

Get a PAYG sim and too it up, it will give you service in the interim and also have somewhere to port your number to for now if the process has already started (if you bought this yesterday, didn't the port happen today?).

It isn't quite as clear cut as just returning it, hopefully they are able to resolve the port issue without problems, you really should have made sure you were happy with the service before giving them the PAC.

They've texted me to say the PAC will go through on Tuesday. I realise now I should have waited but I didn't expect the 3g/4g issue to arise.

I would phone them now and tell them to cancel the port process, after 5pm and it won't be possible to stop it. There should be a number available on their website or in the text.

Just rang Talkmobile who said CW would provide a new PAC code when I take the phone back.
Does that sound right? (hope I'm not going to be passed back and forth!)

(thanks btw d123)

CPW will probably sort it for you
I'd ask them to sort you another provider so that you can utilise the 4G capability of the phone. No point returning the phone if you like it.

Ah, I see. So I can say I want to cancel the contract but change to a different provider (EE for example)?

Yes, that would be the question I would ask. They sold you a 4G phone but a provider that couldn't provide. Obviously, if you change provider the contract cost may change...
Bat your baby blues at them and they are usually pretty helpful.....(well they are at our local one).

Grrr - really annoyed with Carphone Warehouse last night. "No one in the shop is capable of taking returns - all the managers have gone home".

It was only 6pm. Some staff training required I think!

Now have to wait until Thursday before there's a manager in the shop in the evening.

Update

To be fair to CW, they sorted everything out for me last night. Cancelled the old contract and offered me a good 4g deal with EE.

I know it's dependent on store experience, but, the guys in our local store are pretty good with sorting out problems.
Glad you got fixed....
