Can any one throw some light on why I cannot watch my Panny HD freeview recordings on Windows Media Player version 12.WMP picks up the fact that the PVR is there and the recorded programmes are loaded but when I select play nothing yet the same programme recorded in Standard Definition is playable,My computer as an Intel (R) HD graphics card and is fitted out for HD so to my way of thinking there should be no problem but they just don't play,I thought it may be a codec problem but I have downloaded Media Player Codec pack 4.3.5 thinking that would help but No,so I'm at a brick wall. Thanks in advance

Almost all HD programmes are deliberately restricted so that you cannot do this.

With most PVRs the recordings are encrypted on the hard drive. With SD recordings the box will decrypt them on the fly if you copy the recordings to an external USB drive or try to play them across the network using something like DLNA for example.

However it is not usual for HD recordings to be decrypted in the same way. With some Humax recorders you can load custom firmware onto them that does allow decryption of HD recordings in the same way as SD.

If you have a USB hard drive plugged into the back of a telly the encryption is locked to the specific TV that made the recordings. Not even another TV of the identical make and model can play the recordings. Which can be a bit of a bummer if the telly blows up and you have hours of unwatched recordings on the drive as they are now unwatchable!

Thanks for your replies,I was offered the same advice on another forum, and as you say it is a bit of a bummer,it's almost bordering on Paranoia this HD lark, even using a Nexus 7 to stream S$yGo is a nono but I digress...
