Samsung Note

Any Note owners? How do you manage day to day with a larger phone?
I am tempted by the Note 4 it's just the size of the thing worries me.

I too am tempted by the Note 4 but giving the fact that the Galaxy S6 is a few weeks from being released I might wait and see what that looks like and see how both feel before purchasing one of them.

Only negative thing about the Note 4 is it's already pretty much 5 months into the 12 month "flagship" phase before the Note 5 in October, having the shite antique that is the iPhone 5s currently myself I'd now want, and need, a handset that I know will be the latest and up-to-date for the whole 12 months.

As a galaxy S4 user I was tempted by the note 4, but was worried about the size so didn't want to be stuck in a 2 year contract or £550+ out of pocket if I find it too big a pain..
So after a bit of looking I've opted to try a note 3, £250 on Amazon Marketplace so if I don't like it I can sell again and recoup most of my money, had it a few days now...

Interesting thoughts. I will probably wait as well and look at the new phones after Barcelona and then decide. I also like the Sony Z3 but its price never drops unlike the other flagship phones and reviews about its camera has put me off.

I've a Note 3 and previously had a Note 2 (if you do get a Note don't, whatever you do, drop it - the cost of replacing a smashed screen made it pretty well uneconomic to repair).

I love the size of the screen, I don't use a case so it slips easily into a pocket and the size of the screen makes it an ideal e-reader and photo/movie viewer.

I also like the fact that I can replace the battery myself so that heavy users can carry a spare I suppose.

When the original Note came out it was, I think, the only large screen phone, they seem much more common now.

Once the Note 5 comes out I'll probably get a Note 4.

Robbo you need to sit down and think about what you want your phone for. There is always some new bit of kit coming along that will put your phone in the shade. Does it matter that you don't have the latest flagship? Hell no. Embrace it and either use it as an opportunity to save some cash or to change your phone more often. The Note 4 will still be great in 12 months time (the Note 2 is still a good device now well over 2 years since it was released). Of course if you are addicted to having the latest tech then that’s fine but it shouldn’t be just for bragging rights. Of course we all have our own tech budgets.

I've got a note 2 I bought secondhand worth a damaged screen for £40 to try one, and love it! size is a bit unwieldy but usable, S-pen is brilliant and helps navigate that large screen. The cracks in my examples screen aren't a problem, might try replacing it myself if I can pluck up the courage. I wouldn't worry about the 'flagship phase' of the device, my Note 2 is just as quick in real terms as more expensive phones and slated for a Lollipop update later in the year.

Getting older models of phones isn't the issue it used to be as things aren't advancing as fast as they once were, a few years ago, particularly with Apple you needed to be on the latest or its immediate predecessor to get a good experience as hardware advances coupled with more demanding operating systems left you with the choice of not upgrading or having a slow problematic device if you took the plunge.
After the first few days with the note I've found it much larger and heavier then my S4,have a clear plastic case on the back at the moment and it does make it feels a bit on the large side, have ordered a bumper bar to try so this should improve. Might be as it's a new toy but I am Paranoid about dropping or damaging it due to the extra size and weight or scratching the screen in my pocket, battery life seems surprisingly slightly worse as is signal strength, not found a huge use yet for the pen as I had planned to use it to write shopping lists and other sad things but can't seem to naturally write without other bits of my hands touching the screen due to the size of the pen...
That said it's a pleasure to use. Great to type on, some apps like Opera work slightly different in a good way, no memory issues, tones of storage space..
Will assess it for a month to see if it's for me then think about staying with the note 3 or changing to the note 4,

I can see what you're saying like but to me my phone is more of a fashion accessory than an everyday item, which is why I prefer to have the latest model, and yeah I hate the fact that I've got a 2013 phone.

I do like the look of the Note 4 but I know for a fact once the Note 5 comes out I'd probably hate that the same as I do with my iPhone 5s right now, once I do finally get rid of the iPhone 5s and upgrade to a better and up-to-date device I will not make the mistake of signing upto a 24 month contract ever again, I'd rather pay £40 extra a month for a 12 month contract to know for sure I can upgrade again and never have an "old" phone.

I know its shallow and a bit mad but It's how I feel like. I used to love getting my iPhone 5s out on the train when it was "flagship" but now it goes on silent and if I need to make a call I go by the door instead of in the carriage. Can't wait to be able to show off and love owning the Galaxy S6.

I love getting new phones as well and have now limited myself to 2 a year. I also usually have two on me at a time. If it makes YOU happy having the latest phone then its your money you are spending so go for it. The problem is there is always something new coming out to make us unhappy with our current device. The way phones are going through it is only fashion driving the need to change as the flagships from 2013 & 2014 are very capable and will continue to be for another couple of years.

You know most if not all people on the train don't, notice, can't tell or even care what phone you have taken out. Nothing wrong with wanting a new phone but I would not be under the illusion that there are intakes of breath when you whip out your new flagship.

You are 100% correct. I know I am strange in clocking and identifying every phone I see. I am not particularly judgemental unless it is to feel sorry that some people feel the need to use an iPhone (usually a 4 or 4S) with a shattered screen. It is always nice to see something unusual, which generally means any Nokia.

I guess nothing wrong with wanting to have the up to date gadget and if you have the money, go ahead. But actually putting the phone on silent and making phone calls away from other people, so they don't see the out of date phone?! That seems completely OTT to me.
I totally agree though that I feel sorry (for a second maybe) for people, who type on a shattered touchscreen And it always seems to be iPhones. I actually don't think I have ever seen a shattered touchscreen myself, that wasn't an iPhone.

There is some truth in what a previous poster has said regarding advancement of technology. Things have slowed down somewhat over the last 12 months, 2013 was a barmy year though, in that Qualcomm released the Snapdragon 600 and then a few months later the 800. The 600 range went from being flagship level to mid range within the space of mere weeks.

I have said Note 4 and I have somewhat of a love hate relationship with it, I love the big screen, the long battery life (on KitKat not Lollipop). I tend to type a lot more accurately on the keyboard, it actually feels nice in the hand obviously benefitting from metal frame. Though I have no use for the S Pen which will make me consider what handset I get in future. My only criticism is the size being honest, it has still remained the same as the Note 3 in dimensions and what not.

Is the Note 4 a worthy upgrade to the Note 3? YES

Its comes with the latest internals (released at the time), plenty of on board storage which can be supplemented Micro SD. The screen is phenomenal best in its class quite frankly, battery life is superb. When you hold the Note 4 it feels like a premium device compared to that of the Note 3.

If you really want it then get it, though I will say this:

We are entering the most busy period of the year when it comes to new handsets and technology. LG have just launched their Flex 2 which comes with better processor and same resolution as the Note 4. If you can hold off for another month you will find yourself in the position of having the latest phones right now, as opposed to one which was released nearly 6 months ago.

I went from a s4 to a Note 3 last year and would not go back to a smaller screen size, holding a 5" phone now seems like a toy. The big screen is the draw on this thing and I find that it is perfectly manageable, never had a pocket it would not fit in.

It is a joy to surf the web, read a book or watch a video on, still to this day I find the screen pretty damn amazing. There is no way I would go back to a smaller screen.

Got the Galaxy Note 4 in December.
Size....not a problem.
Design, looks, screen, useability all absolutely fantastic.
Previously had HTC Desire and the HD version. The Note 4 beats the pants off any of their competitors.....including anything Apple!!
