Also, has anyone actually gone to jail for this in UK history, so far I don't think they have.
No idea?, but quite possibly, I used to know a guy who 'almost' did

But it was his third offence, first time everything was confiscated and a small fine, second time everything was confiscated again and a large fine - third time he grovelled in court and got off with a small fine again (and I seem to recall he even got all his equipment returned that time)

You do sound like you are sticking up for these ridiculous rules that allow no private radio stations at all. I hope you're not. There should at least be some sort of realistic option to get a licence instead of a blanket no, and the UK's poor system of only giving a licence when they the authorities decide to give one, it should favour initiative and creativity instead.

What's so heinous about creating a radio station that he deserved that sort of treatment, it's utterly disgusting. It's an activity that should be seen as innocuous enough for all to enjoy partaking in, and we could listen to many diverse hobby run stations coming out of out of our villages, towns and cities. Commercial radio has proven itself to be boring time and time again, and community radio is a positive step forward but is rather limited given the difficult in accessing it and licencing it in the first place.

The OP could buy this for a nice bit of kit, I had a variant of it that was nowhere near this well featured. Using a 192KHZ sound card on a computer I could also generate RDS and Radiotext, but it's not built in to the product - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WHOLE-HOUS...item4635a2b054

I'm not 'sticking up' for anything, merely pointing out that it's illegal, and that the penalties can be high.

Although I totally disagree with your suggestion that it should be basically a 'free for all' - there's very little spectrum, and it needs tight control to make it usable.

I've found the Asda fm transmitter @ £6 does the business. The power cable acts as an aerial even when your on batteries.

It is not an illegal transmission if he uses the small FM transmitters legally sold for the purpose in Currys, Argos, and elsewhere, possible even in your shop.
Nor is it if you use a Powerline transmitter for your network - ALSO legally sold in all those places.

Is that not a little hypocritical of you Winston, considering your voracious campaign against those other PERFECTLY LEGAL devices...... Are you a Spectrum Nazi? (when it suites you)

Not at all. Small, legal, FM transmitters transmit on one frequency in an allocated broadcast band.

Legal to sell PLT devices spew interference over the whole spectrum from 2 to 30MHz or even 300MHz. There are no frequencies allocated to them, they just steal other peoples allocations, even the emergency services and air traffic control. Being legal to sell does not make it legal to use them to create interference in this way.

That one is obviously for the N American market and is clearly NOT legal in the UK. Output power is almost certainly above the legal max and an external aerial is not allowed.
