I'm not very good at going off the beaten track (no pun intended) when listening to music.

I tend to listen to well known artists that I've heard on main stream media.

But occasionally I'll hear a song on an advert or at the end of a Glee episode that I is really catchy or got a good hook and think how could I have missed out on that?

For instance last night Glee had a song called 'Cool Kids' by EchoSmith which was really good. But there is no way I'd even consider listening to their album if I hadn't heard that song.

So how do people find these hidden gems without having to wade through loads of bland songs on loads of albums?

Good answer.

Mind you, one person's "bland" is another's "fantastic."

If you have the Shazam App, you can find out what the track is if you don't know what it is or who sings it, then look up the track on Spotify or YouTube. You don't need to go out and buy a full album for one track! Hope this helps.

Also, Spotify will recommend tracks for you based on what you've been listening to so you get to discover lots of new music that way. (No, I don't work for Spotify by the way!!)

Cheers for the link, that is good but you still have to wade through loads of chaff before getting to the 'wheat'.

I just wonder how people do that? It is like having to eat a whole load of plain rice before getting to a piece of meat. By the time you've got to the meat you're tired of eating.

I know what you mean.
I don't use what I posted, I just did a "Google Search" in an attempt to be helpful.

As I've a specific interest in one genre of music, I rely on a few dedicated message boards where others do the work for me and come up with suggestions.

YouTube can help if you find something you like there are other videos listed as recommendations.

If I hear anything contemporary I like on a TV programme, it's usually listed at the end, or you can find it with a bit of effort by Googling it.

Yes I can normally find a song once I've heard it, but I've very rarely heard a song I've like just by randomly listening to a whole load of songs by random artists.

I'm not sure if it is because the good song gets lost amongst all the bland songs or if there is some other psychological reason why some songs stand out like in an advert but not necessarily on an album?.

In my opinion, yes.

Personally, not so much with songs in adverts, but I think you can get "caught up in the moment" with a film soundtrack tune, the experience is tied up with the drama of the scene. Then when you hear it as just an mp3, some of the magic seems lost.

'I Believe In Love' from Mirror Mirror is a bit like that.

I like then song on its own but it is even better with the dance routine from the film.

I find a lot of things through YouTube. I listen to stuff I like and then on the right there is usually a list of songs that are similar. Found some great stuff that way. Heard some crap as well but I do occasionally find a gem I love that leads me to buy the album

I get the feeling it's gone out of fashion now but last.fm still seems like a useful program in this regard. It records what you play (on your pc, laptop or phone) and then makes charts out of it (top tracks/artists of the week/all time) and then gives you recommendations based on what other people who have similar tastes have listened to. It also acts as a social networking device (you can add anyone but it also provides you with a list of those who have tastes similar to yours) and is particularly useful for gigs (it will notify you when an artist you like plays near you, and you can browse gigs that your friends and neighbours are attending).

Aside from that it's really dependant on what kind music you're into. There is an almost limitless supply of blogs/websites that specialise in every kind of music under the sun. It takes a bit of digging but you should be able to find a selection of sites (follow the links down the side of blogs) that meet your needs.

I've always found interviews with artists i enjoy are useful too. It's not always the case, but if you like a particular artist there's a good chance you'll like whoever they were influenced by.

Spotify, Youtube, Soundcloud, Bandcamp etc. are all useful for trying out new stuff for free.

Hope that helps

You only heard 'Cool Kids' on Friday night? If you'd subscribed to the best New Releases playlist on Spotify you'd have heard it months ago: www.spoti.fi/OQ15nN

On the best New Releases playlist on Spotify: www.spoti.fi/OQ15nN all the chaff has been removed so you're left with the wheat

I don't think so; without bad music how can we appreciate the good? So yeah, if you're looking to hear new stuff try the best New Releases Playlist on Spotify: www.spoti.fi/OQ15nN Bound to find something you like on there, and there'll be more of the same on Wednesday evening.

Okay, you may have guessed by now that I actually curate it. Doesn't matter; the point remains the same.
