Wow!

Bear in mind it's initially going to cost almost as much as a new handset, but it's still pretty impressive

I suppose if money was no object and you ordered that new android handset that apparently has the capability to have two micro sd cards, and you got two of these, you'd be looking at a mobile with nearly half a terabyte of storage ..

I have 2 x 128gb micro sd cards. Not sure I'll go for 200gb till the price comes down to under £75.

You can also get a PNY 256gb card for $90.

Great invention considering Apple no longer make the iPod Classic you can now in future put your music collection on your phone. It might be a while before phones can have the ability to reach that capacity.

See the micro sd card is that the same thing that is the memory in an iPhone for example. I was wondering if in years down the line we would be able to get phones with 200gb internal memory.

Makes you wonder, doesn't it ?. Although I suppose internal memory has to be slightly different in the sense that it's got to effectively be a 'hard drive' of sorts, so the access speed is greater.

But then if Apple can produce a 128gb handset in the iPhone 6, I can't see that the day of a 200gb handset is that far away.

thats a full size sd card rather than micro, but $90 is a great price. look for a card of that size on uk amazon and its nearly twice the price!

i have a 128gb as extra capacity in my laptop with the usb sockets filled with 64gb flashdrives, the tiny ones that don't stick out. that works out at about £60, plus shipping and VAT which works out about the same price as a 256gb SSD

sandisk do 512gb SDXC cards but they cost more than most folks computers!

it's great news to get a small card so big. obviously expensive to begin with, but the same can be said for the sizes we commonly use now. i just got a micro 128gb card for £55 and a 64gb was under £20. they would have been £100+ not that many months ago, so give it a year or two and 200gb cards should be near the £50 mark too

Great can't wait to put one in my Samsung Galaxy S6....oh hold on I can't!

With more phones not having SD card slots how will this impact on prices in the future?

We could use a board with a number of microSD sockets on it (eg. nine) and presents as a SATA SSD. So with nine x 256Gb cards installed, it would be a 2TB RAID with redundancy.

Interesting they have made this 200gb and not 256, which might be expected

That tells me perhaps they are nearing the limit of what is technically possible in something so small.

If there is a demand for phones with, say, 1tb of storage (and I'm not sure there is), then you may have to accept larger memory cards......

Just a heads up.

Analysis shows that optimal time to buy Micro SD cards is 18 months after release as the price hits the sweet spot where it hovers around for the next year.

Therefore, for those looking at 128GB memory card you should buy one in Q4 2015.

Those looking for 200GB memory card should look to end of 2016 for optimal price.

What would be the point? That's completely not what they were designed for. A mechanical hard drive would deliver better performance in all areas except seek time, and probably better reliability too.

The limits the form factor places on the read and write speeds of memory cards makes them of very limited use outside the mobile device / camera markets.

£55 for the 128GB SanDisk on Amazon now, which is pretty decent IMO. I've never seen anyone sell the 128GB card for its suggested retail price, so hope the 200GB will 'only' be around £200 and soon fall to nearer £100 later in 2015.

While Samsung may argue that its super fast storage is better than using a memory card, I am not convinced speed matters that much and it's more of an excuse to get people to pay £150 extra for 128GB over a 32GB model, and of course if you change phones fairly regularly then you need to keep shelling out for that storage - whereas anyone with a 128GB or 200GB card can just swap it.

I now own two 128GB cards, two 64GB cards and numerous 32 and 16GB cards. I also have a little tin (previously used for tea leaves) full up of 1-8GB cards. A fair few old M2 cards in there too. So cheap these days that I couldn't give them away.
