Been thinking about getting the free trial and taking it from there. Is it easy to set up without a Smart TV? I've an HDMI cable and already managed to connect the computer to the TV successfully for a football stream, but is it more complex than that?

Does it show tons of films or just a few? Initially I had been under the impression that it showed a vast range which would suit me as I like a lot of obscureish arthouse and foreign stuff, is this not the case?

Do you get lots of UK stuff like the last Alan Partridge series (which I didn't see yet) and so on?

Another option is to get a Chromecast (other streaming dongles are available) and control it from a smartphone or tablet. No cables (provided you have a decent WiFi signal near the TV), and the smartphone or tablet is free to do other things when you've kicked off your viewing.

I set this up for a friend to use Netflix. he's happy with the technology, but not with the material available on Netflix. But that might just be his taste in films.

If I had Netflix, I'd probably be watching Better Call Saul. He hasn't even seen Breaking Bad. Sheesh.

If you have Windows 8 there is an app in the App Store that's free so you use your computer with the HDMi lead.

I've used a HDMI cable to link up my tablet to my TV in the past. It works OK, but IMO the picture quality isn't as good.

If you want to watch Netflix on a TV, then other than Chromecast or a HDMI cable the other option is to take out a subscription on Virgin Media TIVO set up - where you get Netflix and Youtube channels! The quality is great, HD standard.

TBH, Chromecast is the best option for cost-effectiveness, although I don't know how reliable it is.

As for the film library, the British service has improved by leaps and bounds recently but is still lagging behind some of the Netflix services in other countries (I think because Sky has first dibs on a lot of movies in this country, I think that's the reason anyway). But there is still a hell of a lot of good stuff there some great TV as well as movies. And the Netflix original series are very high quality. For five quid a month, it's a bargain IMO.

I don't know about arthouse stuff, but if you search this website you should have a better idea if it's for you.

And yes, there's loads of Alan Partridge, including the movie, Alpha Papa.

Apple are selling their Apple TV for £59 at the moment on their refurb store. Netflix is incredibly simple to use on that. I got one for my mum and dad earlier this week and they can use it no problem despite not being into technology at all.

... or from Google Chrome on a PC or laptop. Chromecast is the gadget to have.
