Report - 90 per cent of all mobile data is consumed by just 8.58 per cent of users

A report has found just how unevenly the distribution of mobile data is, this makes for an interesting read.

Quote:
“Usage of mobile data is extremely unevenly distributed. This is the conclusion of a report by the Location Intelligence business unit of a major communications equipment company.”

Maybe everyone has different data wants and needs, and most importantly allowances?

It certainly shows that only a small percentage use a lot though. Another interesting one from the study...

Quote:
“Half of mobile data is being consumed by just 0.35 per cent of the geographical area covered by the network”

and

Quote:
“It looks as though people are using mobile phone data in preference to broadband and Wi-Fi in their homes. The top 100 extreme data locations the study reveals that data from "Residential" areas makes up 48 per cent of the total and "Industrial" a further 25 per cent. The "Dense Urban" areas that would be expected to contribute the most data only represent 13 per cent.”

I think this might explain when the only network doing unlimited tethering has made moves to end of life it.

So how much mobile data per month consumed is deemed as being excessive?

I think to work out what the usage of the 8.58 percent of users is per user you would...

Take the total number of petabytes of data delivered by a network in a month / year and take 10% off that figure (that's the 10% everyone else on the network gets to use)

Then you have your 90% figure, now work out what 8.58% of users of the network is, for a network like Three that might be 800,000 users.

Then you divide your first figure by the 800,000 and that tells you what those top 8.58% are using on average each month / year. I don't know what the monthly or yearly total delivered data volume is for Three (as an example) offhand.

It seems the report backs up what has been posted before and shows why the unlimited tethering deals came to an end for the very heavy users.
