Simon Rattle
Brilliant news for a limited but appreciated small company of music fans.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-31696988 Personally I prefer Bernard Haitink

Why would he do this when he thinks so poorly of the Barbican as a performance venue. Or is his aim to push to revamp the auditorium or up sticks and move?

He's good depending on the repertoire. I really like his recordings of Mahler and Sibelius although I'm not sure he's been as great a success at the BPO as the media sometimes thinks. Either way, he's a huge figurehead for classical music and his presence back in the UK can only be a good thing!

TBH as a non-concert goer I tend to favour recordings based on label. DG being the gold standard.

I hear the LSO has a very high p*ss artist quotient. You want to see what they're keeping in their tubas.

That will help lift the profile of the LSO. Good catch.

I don't think they need to lift their profile. The LSO are world famous and riespected. They have had some big principal conducting names associated with them over recent decades, eg Sir Colin Davis, Andre Previn and Michael Tilson Thomas. But Simon Rattles presence will ensue a lot of good publicity. Should be a good fit.

This news makes me feel a bit old......
![]() Way back in the early 1980s I made a decision to acquaint myself with Classical Music pretty much starting from scratch Simon Rattle was then the wonderkid of British Classical Music with the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and I seem to remember he did a Mahler cycle which I recorded from Radio 3 on a radio cassette player.......that's how I built up an early collection before I started buying things....... ![]() I think Rattle has always had a reputation as a Mahler specialist....... |

All I ask is that if he gets his wish for a new concert hall for London, London pays for it. Despite what mad Boris thinks it will be a London not a national asset. Traveling to London from the provinces together with overnight hotel accommodation to see a concert isn't practical.
Pleased to see a classical music thread, must be a first! |
