My partner and I are looking at a new tv.
A friend of mine is selling one of these purchased in December and has told me £300.

Smart isn't really too useful as we have virgin media
3d probably won't get used but may give it a go.. Unsure on this one.

At this price point I doubt there is anything between the quality of picture, ive just bought a Panny 4k, but I had an LG for nearly 10yrs, so I'd be happy with either, I'd probably go for the LG just for the extra 2". Sorry if that's no help.

That Panasonic is the E variant where my friend has the B which seems more pricey everywhere.

E is European, B is British.

The difference is the E model does not support freeview HD, whereas the B model does.

I think that's about the only difference.

Which would explain why Pixmania are selling the E not the B - they're Europe based and source accordingly.

And given they are no longer part of Dixons Group - I'd most certainly give them a wide-berth. Better to buy from a UK based seller - makes it much easier if there are any probs.

I'm not sure why you'd want a set at that size which didn't cope with Freeview HD either?

If the E model has dvb-t2 tuner, all you need to do is to install a different firmware, and the tv will receive Freeview channels.

As mentioned I have virgin media so that isn't too much of a worry.

I guess my main question, is to I make my friend an offer of £250 for his 40" Panasonic, or pay the £300 for the 42" LG.

Is the quality going to be particularly noticeable between each set?

Just general advice really, I'm no hardcore used but do like quality items, though I know both Panasonic and LG are pretty decent these days.

For what it's worth, I have the Panasonic Viera TX-40AS640B, and it is an excellent TV - cracking picture (SD is good too) with lots of great features, and easy to personalise. Sound is very reasonable for a flat screen.

We're more than happy with it

It has to be the Panny with its HD tuner

and its ARC hdmi port for a soundbar

I went with the Panasonic and paid £260.

I'm very happy with it.

Are soundbars worth while?
What's the benefits?
Or is surround sound a better option?

I don't really need standalone DVD player as I run Xbox one, with the tv feed passing through from my virgin media.

Is sound bar the way forward, or are there well priced surround sound options available?

Also how does the sound bar sit, due to the TV stand being in the way?
I'm quite particular about how things look, ie in place or not and so on.
