Did Gillian Taylforth quit Hollyoaks to return to EastEnders?
I'm under the impression DTC asked her back while she was still working on Hollyoaks, she decided she much preferred playing iconic Kathy Beale over her Hollyoaks role, and quit one soap to reprise her role in the other.
Anyone else think this is what happened? |

Not sure about that, it's possible though. You can't compare the two, there is no contest, Kathy will always win out over Sandy.
But she was given absolutely nothing to do in HOs, so it is no surprise that she quit. They changed history and made her Darren's mother and the two only shared a handful of scenes in her whole time on the show, it was pointless. The only other things she did was have 2 relationships and some scenes with her kids and helped Ste with his dying mother. They wasted her. |

Yes I think pretty much, wasn't she asked back in November, but it's possible she knew longer back then that but nothing was concrete until recently.
Lets be honest HO s/l are for the teens and young adults, the parents and older folk are ignore until needed, she was pretty good in her first few months in HO but's its gone to the dogs now. How could she refused such a offer, Kathy was where it all started for her and she probably have much more security over in EE then HO, we know how fond BK is with killing people off. |

This is an interesting question :
If Kathy never 'died' in the first place, would Gillian still want to return? |

If I was given the choice as an actor between Hollyoaks and Eastenders I would choose Eastenders. I suspect it's better paid. Eastenders is more talked about than HO too. I don't think there should be any more EE returns from the dead though.

I find it quite funny that DTC stole Gillian of Berkwood.

![]() EE clearly know that they made a hugely regrettable mistake killing off Kathy in the first place. So I wouldn't say its a case of 'bringing back a character from the dead', I'd say it's more a case of 'rectifying their past mistake and putting things right'

Didn't they only offer her a one year contract when she came out of CBB? Her one year was up and considering Sandy never really had a storyline it was always about her sons she probably decided to not to come back. Simple. No big conspiracy.
Just typical Kirkwood putting the limelight on the wrong characters in Hollyoaks. It's a main problem as to why it sucks now. |

I think she probably has kept it secret for a year. The producers and writers plan at least that far in advance.

Except the writers didn't know about it until the 30th - kathy has not been included in any storylining conferences: that is why they held an additional one last week.

According to Gillian she was approached by DTC before Christmas, after her original Hollyoaks exit. She only went back to Hollyoaks temporarily over Christmas/New Year so she didn't quit in favour of EE. But it is still a kick in the teeth to BK (for killing off Pat) as he said he would reintroduce Sandy as and when needed, which isn't possible now.

It's a shame to have lost her, she's a good actress and was totally wasted on HO. Making her Darren's mother could have opened up plenty of SL's but they interacted a couple of times and that was it, not surprised she quit!

It's a no brainer. If you had to choose between EastEnders and Hollyoaks. EastEnders is the show that made her a household name and also where her closest friends are.
She was a much loved character on the show. Hollyoaks is a far inferiour show. |

This is an interesting question :
If Kathy never 'died' in the first place, would Gillian still want to return? Then when Kate Harwood brought back Phil Mitchell is 2005 the storyline she wanted to run with him was reuniting him with son Ben. They asked Gillian to reprise her role as Kathy but she was in the middle of filming series 5 of Footballers Wives so had to decline although she said she would have happily returned afterwards. However Harwood wasn't prepared to wait so went ahead with killing Kathy off out of spite and in order to bring back Ben straight away. Gillian was reportedly very upset that Kathy was killed off and ironically footballers wives was axed after series 5 anyway so she lost that job as well. So it was not a classic case of soap star gets too big for their boots and quits thinking the grass will be greener before going back with their tail between their legs. Gillian Taylforth was extremely loyal to EE and always wanted to go back and it was a shameful the way Kate Harwood treat her. |
