China also aren't alone in what they do, so I wouldn't consider it a buying differentiator personally.

The spying puts me off Android phones....

The spying puts me off iOS phones....

The spying puts me off Windows Phones.....
Slightly disingenuous there, the only makers who have been caught adding malware to their devices are Android makers, like Lenovo and Star.

iOS is also pretty impervious unless the user jailbreaks, and isn't WP8 sandboxed in a similar way?.

Something stupid like 80% of the Openreach and Virgin media core networks use Huawei parts.
Presumably (hopefully) BT/Virgin haven't got their entire core networks connected to the internet regardless of who made it - whereas a mobile phone inherently is.

It is also worth pointing out that the UK government has stuck its oar in as far as Huawei's networking products go - if it's in BT's network (and presumably TalkTalk and others too) then they get the source code and (I think) they oversee the compilation process. How effective this is and whether it's found anything of interest, I don't know. I doubt they'll be doing the same for phones.

(i.e. a management interface of an Openreach FTTC cabinet DSLAM doesn't need to be internet facing)

While Huawei themselves haven't been implicated in dodgy stuff on mobile phones, the no-name Chinese ones that have make me want to steer clear of even more "reputable" brands like Huawei

I think you're missing my point.

I'm not talking about malware on the device. I'm talking about how data is being collected from your device by the companies behind Android, iOS and Windows Phone.

"Spying" isn't just a Chinese thing.

In Asdas just now and the shelf label read 3,2,3. 3p a minute for talk, 2p text and 3p a MB. Pricing error or did they bump the price 300%?

If you apply that to the networks you'd have to use a network other than Vodafone, O2, EE and Three. Could prove a bit restrictive. No BT either.

The price of PAYG on Three is now cheaper than Sim Only?

£17 for Sim Only with 200 mins and AYCE data on a 12 month 'contract'

£15 for PAYG with 300 mins and AYCE data on a 30 day top-up

Is there any benefit at all for taking out a Sim Only deal rather than a PAYG??

Sim only allows feel at home and also you can buy internet packs for EU roaming.

PAYG doesnt allow that.

SIM Only includes 4GB data for tethering. Whereas PAYG has no tethering.

Also, there is the convenience of not having to buy an addon every month.

Saving oneself the annoyance when the All-in-One 15 Add-on becomes the All-in-One 20 shortly?

(No inside knowledge - pure speculation!)

I suppose there could be a price increase on the horizon but as the Sim Only deals have only just risen this month. I am of the opinion that they won't rise again this year so if PAYG does increase I could just start a sim only deal. It just doesn't make sense to tie into a 12 month deal. I don't tether as well. Cheers for the replies btw
