I've had to be at home today because we have had major works in the street by Western Power who have been replacing overhead cables for underground. So, to cut a long story short on that front we have been without power and therefore the internet for just over 6 hours.

Fine I thought because when trying it before by turning off wi-fi on my Nexus 5 I always get the H symbol with the signal strength indicator on the top bar.

However, when the power went off this morning, I tried to use my phone to pick up my emails and again I had the H symbol as before. Nothing happened, just the whirling circle. Tried a few other apps such as online banking but error messages telling me I need an internet connection.

So, I assume on the very day I decided to use mobile data at home EE have let me down and despite the H symbol there wasn't in fact a data connection.

Anyone else with this problem?

I tend to find that while EE 4G is superb when I am on their 3G network it seldom loads pages this is especially true in London or busy shopping centres and I put it down to congestion. I would imagine that many people in your area were using their mobiles for internet access and the local mast was just maxed out.

I've been on EE 3G most of the day as in north east scotland, with 5 or 6 megabit throughput. It was a joy compared to my work Vodafone on GPRS.

Could be a local issue to you caused by the same power works perhaps?

Am I the only one seeing the blindingly obvious reason why data wasn't working on EE.

You had a flipping power cut!!!!!!

Are you going to ask us why your car stopped working when it ran out of petrol next?

Do you really think I'm that f****** stupid to come on here with a question like this if I didn't know what I was talking about?

The power cut was in our street and affected a block of 18 houses. I assume you are thinking that the local base station was affected by said power cut, which I can assure you it wasn't. Christ on a bike!! I sometimes wonder why I have bothered with DS for so many years!!!

Hmm yer that was a little bit of a harsh reply jabbamk1, a power cut doesn't mean the network should fail too.

I have just switched the WiFi off on the phone and I am still getting no data, just the swirling circle in most apps despite the H on the top bar signal indicator. Power has now been back on since 15:30.

Have you got the correct APN settings on your phone? if they are wrong, your phone display would show a data connection, but not be able to correctly access the data.

Irritating isn't it.

It was obvious from your post that it was a localised power issue.

I would guess that either the EE APN needs activating, or if it is then the settings are not quite right.

I still don't get the point of this thread though.

it could still be a power issue or could have been a different issue. Stuff happens. Deal with it.

Just like how you were able to deal with the power cut. This sense of customer entitlement is ridiculous sometimes. You say its worked every time and so the one time it doesn't work you've now been "let down" and its a big "problem". Yet you don't say how you were let down by the power company carrying out works and affecting your day.

With respect you are just trolling this thread I think. I have come on here to try and get the help of genuine DS's who generally I find are helpful.

Now, lets get on with the issue as I'm sure that some of you are right and the issue might be the phone. However, in the meantime, I have loaded an app called Network Info. The readings from that app [with WiFi OFF] are as follows:

Net Operator: EE
SIM Operator: 30(MNC - Mobile Network Code]
Net Type: (DC)HSPA+ *42.2 Mbps
Net Strength: -87dBm *14ASU
Data State: Connected
Data Activity: no activity

There is then a list of Cell details, but is that section relevant.

I have even taken the option of speaking to Western Power this morning who assure me there are no power outages anywhere in this region this morning.

Still, I get no data. Sensible comments please?

Upgrades going on? I get that quite a lot here now, combined with either 3G going off or everything. Been rock solid for 10 years and now it's all over the place.
If there's no throughput from that mast at all then they will know about it.

I have just wasted half an hour of my life by making the mistake of talking to Customer Services. After going through the switching off and switching on the phone, switching off, removing the SIM card and replacing it, taking the dog for a walk, moving the fridge, turning off the microwave etc. etc. they have no answer except to tell me there are no outage problems anywhere on the EE network today or during the past 7 days. They suggest I get the phone checked.

Probably a good idea, though probably easier to check the sim in another phone first, do you have another handset to try the sim in?

Unfortunately, my 'spare' phone only takes a standard SIM. The Nexus 5 is a micro SIM. I'm going out shortly. I'll see how it performs in another area.

Depending on the phone, you can make a micro sim work by aligning the contacts properly....

That is a classic post. So a base station with its power cut is able to put out a signal indicating "H". How did you decide on that?

If the local cell had died from a power outage another nearby one could have taken over but be overloaded so dropping voice calls, no data etc. I don't this is what happened here though.

Right folks. An update after going out for a couple of hours to pick up papers from work and visit to my brother.

My work is covered by EE 4G coverage and my phone duly picked this up as normal with excellent download and uploading of a couple of items of work etc.

My brother lives not far from my office but only has 3G. Again, display showed H, the network info app showed HSPA+ *14.4 Mbps and again data was incoming without problems.

Returned home and back to the same problem. As I returned saw a guy I know across the road from me and he is having the same problem with EE on his iPhone (don't know which model - irrelevant anyway). So I think it's safe to say that despite EE claiming they have no data outages anywhere there is clearly a local problem with the base station.

However, as the electricity work to our houses is now complete and there should be no more power outages then my home Wi-fi will, as it had done until yesterday, circumvent those problems. Calls and texts appear to be functioning quite normally.

As a footnote to all this and particularly to jabbamk1 where in my OP do I say "let down" and its a big "problem". The whole thing was on my observations and requesting if anyone else had experienced this problem.

But everything I said in my post could happen. just read Lucian's post below yours.

Im not saying its the only reason why the op experienced the outage. But to then say that he feels let down and make a whole thread about it is silly.

You don't see me or others making a thread everytime there is a service outage.
