My dad has a lumia and he wanted to try and use the maps on it to get him somewhere next Monday, but since I'm an iPhone user I've no idea how it works, I mean I'll soon pick it up when I've had a look but I just wondered if there's anything else I need to know before using it? The maps will be up to date because I make sure he always updates his phone apps/software. Other than that is it just a case of putting in an address/post code and that's it?

Secondly will this be using his mobile data whilst in use?

Cheers

Yes basically.
But.... you can download maps for offline use.

If you download the maps then the only data it will use is a small amount to use mast triangulation to speed up the GPS lock (aka A-GPS ie Assisted GPS). As with all sat-navery a good idea to check the route to make sure it makes sense. My Lumia always wants to use a "Balanced" route and I always change it to "Fastest" route. The roundabout symbols do *not* reflect the layout of the actual roundabout (as Garmin sat-navs do for example) so be careful to check the exit number shown.
