She won 2 Grammys - best new artist and best female pop vocal for Chasing Pavements. It's curious to witness the career progression of Adele and Duffy. Duffy's debut sold in much bigger numbers (initially and at the time) than Adele's but we all know what happened next. Why did Duffy's follow up album flop and Adele's become (arguably, in real terms given the age we live in) the biggest selling album ever? Could it REALLY be because we were TOLD we loved it? Absolute tosh, Adele's initial single releases were amazing and her live performances on high profile TV shows (especially The Brits) just backed up this view. It's funny, I haven't played '21' in ages but on youtube the other day I was linked to her singing Hometown Glory on Jools Holland so watched it. And realised AGAIN why she's had such subsequent massive success - primarily she's simply astounding live plus the songs on '21' (melancholy, sad, revelatory) caught the mood of the moment perfectly.
She obviously won't see again the success of '21' with any subsequent releases (what album in the future (by ANYONE could??) But she's a great artist and an amazing singer all the same.
