Did anyone else see Click last week?
It was filmed entirely on smartphones.
Really interesting bit about how difficult it was to edit and get the sound right.
But as Spencer Kelly mentions, I was totally amazed at the overall quality of the picture.
I kept forgetting the the whole show was coming from any one of the many handsets they had there.

I was impressed too. Shows how far we have come when the difficulties with such a feat aren't the obvious (camera quality) but the things like editing and sound.

Yes I saw it the other day and it was impressive. The main snag they had was editing the programme.

The only way we could edit something as complicated as a 23 minute programme with video from nine or 10 different cameras encoded with nine or 10 different codecs, was to use Adobe Premiere Pro on a Surface Pro 3.

But these machines simply do not have the processing power to cope with the incredible burden. Even when they are not crashing, freezing and juddering, they are not keeping up with the editors' keypresses.

Yeah, I noticed that too.
She's not, shall we say, at all uneasy on the eye and the Guard that she walks past clearly looks at her backside and then makes some comment to the other guys.
Come on guys, this is the 21st Century. Ogle all you like but not on camera!!!

Thanks. I wondered if it was on here somewhere.
Anyway, I thought this forum was appropriate too.

I loved the bit about getting the clip-on mikes sorted with all the extra gizmos they needed in between. The Camera Woman with the gimbal was pretty impressive. Love watching proper professionals at work.

I watched it in HD on my 50" Pioneer 508XD (one of the best Plasmas ever) and I couldn't believe it was all shot on phones.
There were obvious issues with focus sometimes and uneven lighting a bit but generally most people wouldn't notice the difference from broadcast quality cameras.
Amazing!

Only tangentially relevant but a recent episode of the massive American sitcom 'Modern Family' was filmed pretty much entirely on iPhones: http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-ra...screen-episode

It had the potential to be really gimmicky and border on Apple product placement, but it was actually done really well and turned out to be one of their best episodes (and if you've seen the show, you'll know that's pretty high praise indeed).

Not sure when it airs over here but if you're able to watch it through, erm, 'other' methods, then I'd certainly recommend a view.

Given how we saw all the issues the BBC had to contend with, do we believe that the Modern Family episode was done with no other equipment?

The same can be said when Nokia did films with its phones years ago. In fact, we know Nokia got caught out once (different equipment revealed in a reflection).

I thought Modern Family was edited on Mac's using Adobe software, but Filmed on iPhones? In California they have brighter daylight than we do in UK

Most of the Click issues revolved around editing and sound quality. I presume the MF team still used their regular boom mics, but even using an internal iPhone mic they'd still have the luxury of being in a closed set as opposed to the middle of a world conference! And as jchamier says, the editing was done as normal, or at least on proper machines cut out for doing the job.

I guess the final advantage the MF team had was simply that it didn't matter if it looked like it had been filmed on a smartphone, because that was kind of the point; for Click, the aim was presumably to make it as close to normal broadcast quality as possible. There is some cool behind-the-scenes footage available on how the Modern Family episode was shot and it's fair to say it wasn't just point-the-iPhone-at-the-actor - there were still camera crews and gizmos galore - but I've no reason to believe the "iPhone footage" in the show isn't actual iPhone footage.

I can't remember where it was now, but there was a lengthy article about how challenging they found that Modern Family episode. Originally they had the actors holding the iPhones and iPads, but the shots were terrible. Eventually they had professional camera operators holding the equipment, and the actors holding their wrists to make it look as if they were holding the phones.
