Is she homophobic. Wasn't she against Sophie and Sian too.

No I don't think she is homophobic but because of her age and her beliefs she probably finds it hard to understand. She was fairly nice to Sophie and Sian though

No, it's a misunderstanding. Being a traditionalist, she's not keen on Billy's radically modern ideas for the church which Sean wrongly interprets as her being anti-gay. I think he ends up having a go at her before she puts him right. TBH I don't disagree with Emily. A 'church comedy night' sounds bloody awful to me

BTW Emily eventually accepted Sophie and Sian's relationship IIRC.

He must be the single most crass and stupid Vicar in the UK. If he's intent on "modernising" some of the church events with comedy nights and so forth why on earth is he asking the opinion of a woman in her 80s?

I don't think Emily is homophobic, maybe just a little traditional in how she views Church fund raising events. And to be fair to her, if most of the church goers are elderly, they will prefer a bring and buy sale or baking competition to a concert or comedy night.

However, Sean is so self obsessed and ready to take offence that he'll assume anybody that doesn't seem keen on his or Billy's ideas will do so because of homophobia

The problem is that shouldn't be a reason to be homophobic though

It's all about ignorance.

It makes me so angry when people hide behind their religion as an excuse to be homophobic. If you don't agree with two men or two women being together, that is fine. But don't give me the classic "because the bible tells me so" or "it's against my beliefs" because to me that is invalid.

LOL what a sweeping statement that is! By those standards my Grandmother should have drown me in the bath when I told her I was gay then? She was the most committed Christian I knew.

Whilst religion and homosexuality will always be a tenuous subject, I think that in this instance, she is irritated more by the vicar's ideas for the church as well as the VILE Sean pushing his way into the fold and making it all about him (as usual!)

Totally agree.

I know plenty of people in their 80s or older (my great aunt died aged 99 last week), most of whom are still religious and none of whom have ever shown any evidence of homophobia. My best friend from school is gay, my whole family) including my Grandad who was born in 1907) knew from when we were teenagers and have always welcomed him with open arms.

You can't judge a whole generation, religious or not in such a way.

Emily just thinks it is not the best way of raising money for the Chirch - stick in her ways from that point of view perhaps, nothing to do with being a bigot. And Sean isn't a Christian, he's just bibbling in because he has this need to be joined at the hip to his boyfriend and maybe she finds an interloper butting in to a community group she has devoted decades of her life to annoying as she would if Billy was dating someone like Eva that wanted to change everything.

Well your argument is kind of irrelevant to this thread, as it has already been established that Emily isn't homophobic.

She only has a problem with Billy's eagerness to modernise the church.

Urgh excuse me, who died and made you god of the forum. You have no right to label my post or anyone's irrelevant. I am talking from a view point in general, not Emily being a homophobe. It isn't irelevant because my post was about homophobia, and the word homophobic was used in the title. Your not a mod, so don't call the shots around here.

Yes that was my reaction.

Labelling a whole community (Christian and/or Old) as sharing the same views is as bigoted as others having an intrinsic hatred and fear of homosexuality.

Emily isn't homophobic, no way. She's an elderly lady who wants the church to stick to traditional fund-raising events.

My Nan and Grandad were accepting of me being gay. Both didn't live long sadly (65 and 77).

It seems to be agreed that Emily is not homophobic.
However even if being around homosexuals did make her uncomfortable that would not make her necessarily homophobic.

Me Whoever is homophobic is wrong.

Having said that I didn't think Emily was being homophobic, I think she just didn't like the Vicar's ideas and was irritated with him. I'm certainly not homophobic and he REALLY irritates me.

On a side note I keep thinking what if Sean and the vicar ever have a serious story line Clearly it can never happen.

ROFLMAO

That's exactly my point! Go look up "irrelevant". This thread asked if Emily was a homophobe and it's been clearly stated that she's not - so why are you going on about people using religion as an excuse to be homophobic when it obviously doesn't apply to the character being discussed in this thread??

I imagine it can be difficult when something you have grown up with as being illegal and immoral is "suddenly" declared acceptable. (I don't think Emily is homophobic either. I meant in general)
