I've just gone to the BBC iPlayer to watch EastEnders, having waited all weekend to see the next one, only to find that there isn't any until tomorrow evening. There is football on instead. I didn't realise this.

Oh! It makes me mad!!

Of all the channels to put it on, why couldn't they have put it on BBC Three, or better still, one of the Sports channels?

I now have to find something else to watch, as I'm not a big footie fan at all. I always watch EE while I'm eating my evening meal. I'm someone who doesn't react greatly to change, unfortunately.

Anyone else miffed about this? Especially after the football on the start of the Anniversary Week.

Every time this happens, a thread like this appears.

I'm no football fan either but it's really not a huge issue to have the odd episode moved. BBC have to cater for all taste and lots of people like football.

It's easy for you to say, but if you're stuck with what to watch instead, either on YouTube, DVD or Satellite, then it gets boring.

I ended up watching an episode of the Royle family on YouTube. Seen them all about twenty times anyway, but it filled a gap while I had my tea.

There is a chance there might not be an ep next Monday also, as there is a possiblity of a FA Cup replay being shown

This has been in the schedule for weeks and it will keep happening during the FA Cup.

Like it or not, there are millions of people that enjoy football and as they pay their license fee, they have a right to be catered for. Due to the nature of sport, they really need to be shown live and if that means a Soap has to be rescheduled sometimes then so be it.

There isn't a sport channel that is subscription free and as i say, the BBC has an obligation in it's license fee charter to provide diverse entertainment - that includes Sport.

It is a mainstream sporting event which will attract high ratings, therefore it's natural 'home' is on BBC1 rather than one of the other channels - just as EastEnders belongs there.

Exactly.

This is actually the second thread on this today and i'm sure there were several about it last week complaining in advance.

I also don't like football and only watch it if forced but accept that it needs to be shown.

Why didn't they just move EastEnders to BBC Two or BBC Three?

I never understand why people get upset about the football getting in the way of Eastenders. I know it's a tiny bit annoying to be looking forward to an episode and then realising it won't happen on the night but they make up for it anyway with a double bill some time so it doesn't cause much harm. It helps that I do like football (although I didn't watch it tonight) but it's nothing to be upset about, so long as we see it in the future

I wouldn't object to that as i look at the schedules in advance and make a note of any changes but a lot of people complain when they do that - they did last year during the World Cup and also back in the Olympics.

Series links don't tend to work when shows change channels and as many people don't actually look at television schedules in advance these days but rely on habit (it's Monday, therefore EE will be on at 8pm on BBC1) as you obviously do or you'd have known it wasn't on today before going to I-Player, people miss episodes so ratings go down.

However. Series link will pick up an additional episode on a Wednesday or a double length episode so people are less likely to miss it.

It's sad, but shows will tend to lose viewers just be being on a different, 'minority' channel. The demographic of a BBC2 viewer is somewhat different to a BBC1 one. Many viewers that don't like mainstream soaps or sport and prefer high brow shows will complain that they aren't being given a cultural alternative if something like EE reguarly goes onto BBC2 - something usually on BBC2 will have to be cancelled or postponed for that after all.

Plus as I say, people that watch out of routine won't knnw it has changed so ratings will suffer.

Oh seriously...

Not on BBC Three or not on a sports channel because the BBC realise they will not get enough viewers (like when major events are on namely Wimbledon, World Cup, Euros, Olympics, FA Cups etc etc) plus the BBC like BT Sport have the rights to show FA Cup games. For those who do not hold a subscription it is only fair that they get to see a football match LIVE on a terrestrial channel. Namely BBC 1 for the viewers or when ITV had the rights ITV1 was the main broadcaster.

I'm not miffed at all and I don't even care who plays (fine we beat a 10 man, dive... dive harder Man Utd 2-1 and was a bloody brilliant game, we played well and to be honest has been the best Monday in a while. Come on you Gunners lets win the FA Cup again! ). I like football anyway and to be honest the BBC will show Eastenders to make up for the half an hour lost.

And if people think this original post is bad, go the the BBC Eastenders page on Facebook. Moaning, whinging and whining at the loss of ONE episode in a week. But people won't do the same when it's Red Nose or Children in Need because it's charity.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong... I love EE but I also love my football. In fact I love football more, I will stop watching a Tuesday episode at 7:45 for Champions League football.

I know it is hard to believe for us soap heads, but not everybody on the planet like EastEnders, many licence fee payers do like Sport. You will get your 4, 27 minute episodes acroos the week. My advise buy Radio Times.

EE not being on because of sport doesn't bother me because I know that there's usually hour-long or Wednesday eps!

It's on tomorrow, Wed and Thur this week and Thurs is an hour-long ep.

Exactly.

I know people that are actually quite resentful that 2 hours of primetime on the major channels (BBC1 and ITV1) are taken up by soap every weekday. Okay they could watch something else but if they happen to live with somebody that likes soap (like my Dad with m Mum before she died and me before i left home) and they want to have any quality time in the same room as their family, they have to deal with it. So, when there is a major sporting event that my dad is interested in, we have to deal with it. It's called compromise but then I grew up in the days of 3 or 4 channels, no video recorder and only one tele so you had to learn to give up some things you'd like to watch. Even when we got a video, it was used to time shift, you'd have to wait a couple of days to see it usually because other people would want stuff actually being transmitted on.

At the end of the day, we still have 2 hours of EE on this week, it's been rescheduled not cancelled. What are the football fans getting, one game on BBC1 every 2 weeks?

I don't want to sound like i'm being harsh or dismissive, it is disappointing when your favourite show isn't on when you expect it to be , especially if it is part of your routine but I do think people need to accept that sometimes it is unavoidable, it is publicized in advance and is not being done to 'get' at them.

This is a spoof thread right?

I like Eastenders, and all the other soaps, and I don't like football, but I don't mind when soaps and other shows are sometimes moved for sports.

It's not like you're losing an episode, they will just put it on wednesday, our put a double episode on one night.

Are you going to complain about Friday... Eastenders isn't on again because of Comic Relief. How dare they replace Eastenders with a charity fundraising night!

No Friday episode due to Comic Relief. We have to see celebrities sitting in a bath of Baked Beans, wearing their red noses, on that evening. I'm looking forward to Friday because when I'm out in my local town, I shall be wearing my Red Nose, plus my pin badge and my wrist band. Got them all earlier today. Tempted to get a mug so I can have my tea in it on Friday!
