The thing is this only demonstrates that BB4 didn't have show offs rather than there were no show offs before BB5 as there were certainly show offs in BB1, 2 and 3 and even 4 tbh. It's just for a variety of reasons BB4 got a boring rep but 2 and 3 certainly didn't.
I've never agreed with the view that BB was once an innocent experiment purely about seeing how different people live together and that it has changed massively since the early days. It was a contest from the get go and the HMs lied and had game plans from that very first series. We had a showmance in that very firt series too and we had nudity, kissing and sexual touching. I remember when the perceived house floozy Mel massaged or was massaged by Andrew (

) and he walked off with an erection

The camera focused right in on this.
I think the show was very much set from the beginning and has more or less followed on since then. There's been talk of manipulation and show favourites ever since then as well. The only, but very significant change since then is less and less to the point of virtually no live feed and that has had the huge negative effect on the show in my view, well that and there being themes. The themes make manipulation normal and lack of live feed means we hardly get to know the HMs and as a consequence find it impossible to make out the HM characters, personalities and their actions and mean we're totally in the hands of the producers to tell us what the story is.,
It's definitely not what it was but that is more in regard to how we enjoy the show than the nitty gritty of the type of HMs and their wishes for after the show etc
