Robin Thicke loses 'Blurred Lines' lawsuit
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/ne...wsuit-20150310 Quote:
Robin Thicke noticeably ripped off Marvin Gaye's 1977 hit "Got to Give It Up" when he wrote the smash hit "Blurred Lines" with Pharrell Williams and T.I., a Los Angeles jury has decided. He and co-songwriter Pharrell Williams must pay Gaye's family $7.3 million as part of the ruling, according to Variety. The verdict puts to rest over a year's worth of legal back and forth between Thicke and Gaye's estate, in which the latter sought $25 million in damages.
What goes around comes around I guess

Wrong verdict imo apart from a vaguely similar intro the song doesn't sounds the same and the melody certainly doesn't.
Odd decision. |

I'm assuming the majority of the jury were women who are members of women's anti sexism groups

Why was the daughter crying in court?
Drama. But I wonder does Thicke regret Blurred Lines sometimes |

I know he's allegedly a bit of a douche but I feel a bit sorry for Robin Thicke. A lot seems to be going wrong for him recently.
The Gaye's earn tons in rights and are apparently now going to try and stop sales of 'Blurred Lines' completely. Seems a bit greedy to me, you'd think they'd be happy with the verdict as it is. |

Sounds a little like it. But sometimes musicians can imitate subconsciously just as writers do. I don't think I would take someone to court unless the rip off was absolutely blatant, unless of course I am naive and it is just money people are interested in.

Internet says Thicke has $15 million, assuming it's out of his pocket (I am guessing it's going to be Interscopes) then he's falling hard

I'll never know why Fugees thought that Enya wouldn't sue for Ready or Not. |

Drama. But I wonder does Thicke regret Blurred Lines sometimes i think it's obvious they copied the song, but i'm surprised at the ruling, but that's the problem with a jury of non experts. there are loads of songs that sound similar without copying from another, and usually it's just the melody/chords/notes/lyrics that sound as opposed to a general sound, so this could cause issues with other tracks if people go to court |

I've not compared the songs, not sure I've actually heard the Marvin Gaye song, but I would assume there must be a lot of evidence that they are extremely similar for this to have gone to court, let alone get this verdict. As others have said, there are plenty of songs that sound a like but there's not many involve a copyright lawsuit.
As for Robin Thicke, he was happy to take credit at the time by getting his name on the writing credits, and now having dropped Pharrell in it by saying he didn't actually write it, I can't feel sorry for him at all. |

In some ways I feel sorry for him because it was obvious during the midst of his success he was going through a huge midlife crisis but after the Miley thing I find it hard not to gloat just a little bit.
Is that bad

Madonna should have sued Gaga over Born This Way but I think she got her revenge in a much better way by mashing them up and proving it was her song

Why should have Madonna sued Lady Gaga? I don't think BTW (single) sounds anything like Madonna has done, does it?
If you missed the hysteria and controversy over that which still follows both Gaga and Madonna to this day then you must have been living under a rock. |

So the backing track rhythm and that knocking block sound is very similar to the original Marvin Gaye track, hence the Gaye family won the case.
What was with all the crying from the Gaye family though? Thought that was a bit strange and over dramatic. |
