Did anyone like the Ferreira family on EE during the Berridge era?

I thought the eldest son was handsome and I liked Pushpa but they were pretty awful.

What do you think Peggy would have made of the father if Babs didn't get that illness and the actor playing the father hadn't gotten into problems with his visa?

When it was announced that they were casting an Asian family I had high hopes. What emerged was a let down. This month marks 10 years since the Ferreiras departed EE.

They were a Hindu family with a Goan Catholic surname and an Arab Muslim half-brother (Tariq).

Nonsensical plotlines, though the big one involving the father never materialised. Maybe if that came about it would've turned their fortunes around. The stabbing and kidney transplant storyline were painful to watch.

Ash was involved with Shirley "Legend" Benson and Adi dated Sasha who turned out to be a prostitute. I vaguely remember something kicking off at a wedding where Kareena blurted it out.

Aside from Pushpa Ferreira (played by the chef Madhur Jaffrey) making a guest appearance, they missed a step by not casting a full time matriarch for the family.

The dad Dan was a bit OTT. The fact EE scouted Bollywood to cast an Indian dad instead of homegrown talent wasn't too well received by some British Asian actors.

I reckon even Nina Wadia, if she was cast as the Ferreira mum in a permanent role, wouldn't have been able to redeem them.

IMO Louise Berridge gets way too much flak as EP, but this creation was weak. Still it shouldn't be used as a stick to beat her with, figuratively speaking. She was still better than Bryan Kirkwood.

In a way, EE bosses learned from their mistakes as far as creating an Asian family goes. Look at how amazing that Masoods turned out.

I feel bad for the actors who played the Ferreiras. If EE had properly researched beforehand they could have done alright.

If the father were played by a British Asian actor, who would you want it to be?

The Nazirs in Corrie are just like the Ferreiras.

What a terrible family they were.

Terrible. Everything about them was terrible. So badly miscast, so badly written. They didn't fit into EastEnders at all. It was apparent right from the start this was the case too. They should have been axed after their first year, keeping them on into a second just prolonged the agony of how bad they were.

The only decent thing to come from them was Sasha Perkins. Jemma Walker is a very good actress who suited EastEnders but guilt by association meant her character got axed before her time.

It was awful. They should have recast the dad when the actor had visa issues. Can't remember what the dad's storyline was I be. Does anyone know?

As I recall, the father, Dan, was very controlling and oppressive. He and the eldest son, Ash, were competing for the heart of the scintillating Shirley Benson and Dan was using some previous gambling problems as leverage with his son. He also bullied the middle son, Adi, about everything.

The storyline was supposed to be that the kids killed Dan - I think after he beat Adi or possibly Kareena - and buried him in a shallow grave in the garden.

The actor's departure meant that 50 plus scripts had to be re-written. There were other cast problems at the time - including Kasey Ainsworth being taken ill whilst pregnant derailing the other major story planned - so they had to write something else for the Ferreiras to cover the hole - hence the tedious kidney plot.

I forgot Babs was out of the show in 2004.

They weren't Hindu, they were Catholic. They confirmed this when the Vic decided to randomly 'do' Diwali.

There is a large Catholic population in Goa due to the Portuguese influence.

I was too young to hate the family and I thought they were all okay but I don't remember being overly enamoured with the kidney storyline, I just remember not particularly caring for them. I remember thinking the daughter was pretty though!

I think the planned storyline of them killing Dan and covering up his death would have worked out a lot better for them, but it seems like they reworked the idea for Den's murder the following year, which was a huge and memorable storyline with much more established and popular characters at its heart. So maybe things did work out for the best

I liked them!

But then I hate Janine & Sharon who everyone seems to love!

Janine would have gotten on famously with Dan, given their personalities.
