Never in DTC's era have I seen many males become a "victim" to anything.

Females:
+ Sharon, victim to a break-in, she was broken for weeks.
+ Lucy, victim to a murderer, she died.
+ Dot, victim to Nick, until she finally fought back.
+ Carol, victim to cancer, fought back.
+ Kat, victim to arson, was supposed to be broken for months.
+ Ronnie, victim to Nick, stuck in a coma.
+ Kim, victim to premature birth.
+ Tina, victim to abuse, finally fought back and Tosh left.
+ Linda, victim to rape, still broken.

Males:
+ Stan, victim to cancer.

I'm getting quite uncomfortable with the amount of females who are going through a rough time compared to the males, who are getting all the glee in the show! When are we going to get a storyline where the roles are switched? DTC is portraying women as weaklings which isn't always the case!

I have a strange feeling that these don't quite render as true victimisations

None of these are victimisations though. Just bad things. You don't suffer from false imprisonment. There aren't special classes for people who have been conned. Max and Charlie weren't the victims, Emma and Ronnie were. Or else it would go like this;

"I am a victim of a car crash"
"I am a victim of having a wife in a car crash"
"I am a victim of having my brother's wife in a car crash"
"I am a victim of having my son's brother's wife in a crash"

Charlie, Ian, Phil and Peter are all victims of crime. Ian and Peter Lucy being killed, Phil
someone cutting the brakes and Charlie, the car crash and cutting the brakes. They have all suffered for the crimes and therefore could be seen as victims. Even Max could be tacked onto this, if the brakes hadn't been cut, Roxy would have slowed down and Emma would've lived.

Ben is a victim of his own stupidity, but have no sympathy for him!!!

Oh and Nick is a victim of drugs, seeing as they killed him in the end!

But on the same token you could argue that Kim wasn't a victim. She gave birth prematurely, it happens. I'd argue being falsely imprisoned can cause as much distress as giving birth prematurely. In both cases neither were physically hurt (but it was suggested that Phil may have got into some fist fights while inside) but the emotional distress is definitely in equal measure.

You can't argue for victimization when it suits you and not appreciate the other side of it. While Emma was the victim, it's those that are left behind that have to continue suffering so in a way, Max is a victim.

Just as Aleks has been a victim of infidelity. Peter and Ian a victim of months of lies. There are arguments to be had on both sides.

I'm uncomfortable with the portrayal of victims of abuse and trauma. Women like Kat, Shirley and Whitney use what happened to them in the past to avoid taking responsibility for their actions. In Whitney's case it is particularly tragic as she could have been such an inspirational character. I wish Eastenders would realise that childhood abuse and trauma doesn't have to be a life sentence and women can be survivors instead of perpetual victims.

Isn't Patrick a victim of abuse from Denise?

The tone was set with that embarrassing "Everybody Hurts" trailer.

Yes. I can remember that that really made quite a lot of people on here feel uncomfortable

I'm very uncomfortable with the last line that he's portraying women as weaklings. Linda isn't a ~weakling for being raped, Carol isn't a weakling for getting cancer, likewise the other examples - that's incredibly problematic thinking all round.

I think he's moved the female characters to the forefront - admittedly some terrible things have happened to some of them, but ultimately it is showing their strength and resilience and the male characters are getting their fair share as well.

That was misleading anyway....Phil was the third victim, he got shot. So it should have been Linda, Kat and Phil in the trailer.

Agee with all this, except Phil is the only character who can miraculously survive everything

I think he's showing us that even the strongest of people suffer setbacks, but over time, things slowly heal and we slowly rebuild our strength.

I think that rather than the rape showing how weak Linda is, it actually showed how strong she is.
