Is it just me? I just can't take James Bye serious as Martin. To me, it would've only worked if James Alexandrou reprised the role or if not, don't bring him back at all.

This is the one new face that I just can't take seriously.

Same but I dont think he's had enough scenes. He's kind of just been brought in and seen here and there. I would like to see what material they give him over the next few months.

i think he needs his own SL

when he first appeared it was for the whole of less than 10 scenes (correct me if im wrong) and then disappeared until live week he just needs time its like Matt Smith when he was cast as DR WHO i didnt warm to him at first but by the time episode 4 of his first series aired i was totally loving him

From what I seen, I think NuMartin is a decent character and I already prefer him over the obnoxious Carters.

Not sure what purpose his character is meant to have in the show!

The two of them have absolutely no chemistry together and it's even more tedious than whiney whitney and one dimensional lee

I don't like the fact he was recast but the actor's fine. The idea of him and Stacey together, as much mooted by this forum, sounds rubbish however.

I don't think it helps that he was not recast and introduced to us amongst his family, with Pauline and Mark dead there isn't anyone of "family" to make him Martin. If this Martin had come back to the square and Pauline had still been about perhaps I'd have had an easier time adjusting. It's early days still!

Recasts such as Lauren, Ben, Lucy and Peter, Bobby too... all worked because A) the character was young enough a recast didn't change anything too notable and B) they had established actors an families to welcome them into the fold.

This is it. He needs more scenes with Ian, Dot and Sonia. I forget who he is supposed to be half the time!

I can't take him seriously as Martin either. He just isn't. I'm not generally too bothered by recasts but this one doesn't work for me at all. James A was in the role too long to recast.

It's because he doesn't have any of his immediate family to interact with. Ian is around but they've barely said two words to each other since Martin returned. I think the actor is fine, but it will take a bit of time for the audience to get used to the 'new' Martin.

Why can't you take him seriously? He's similar in height and appearance. He has the same accent. As recasts go it's a good one.

Don't agree with whoever said he needed family to bed him in. He has Ian, Sonia, Carol and Rebecca. People we've seen him interact with. He also has people he's known for years like Phil, Dot and Sharon. They brought in a best mate for him and have shown Stacey to be a love interest. There's a place vacant on the market for him to work. It's all there for the character. All he needs now is some story lines.

I quite like him, and I'm usually not a recast fan. I think it was because couldn't stand Martin when JA played him. Nothing against the actor, I just didn't like the character, but he seems more mature now and I think the actor fits better with Sonia than JA did.

He hasn't been give enough material for people to want to like him
But going by what i have seen, I like him,. He's sweet. Innocent. A bit lost. I was never fond of Martin anyway, but I think that's because of the original actor who played him plus he was written as very arrogant and argumentative.

Ive warmed to him very much and I feel physically and behaviour wise hes a good fit for Martin and an excellent continuation of the previous actor.

Completely agree. when James A played him he was like a bear with a sore head, always scowling and moaning. Much prefer how he's been written with this actor.

Looking at the online reaction it's clear that some people strongly dislike him and will not change their opinion due to the recast. I think most people however, are waiting to see more from him, we've only had a few episodes and a handful of scenes to go on.

I like him. I didn't at first, but I've grown to like him and I actually think EastEnders needs him, he's a breath of fresh air, nice and down to earth and normal.

It took Jacqueline Jossa as a recast Lauren a good while to win over many sceptics who didnt feel she was the real Lauren or as good as Madeleine but for the most part the majority of fans came around and Im confident the same will happen with James Bye too.

I like the idea and it seems that is inevitable it will happen in the near future.

Stacey, unlike Sonia, wouldn't bully nor would she also belittle someone she cared about. In fact I would say that she would stand up for Martin as it is in her nature to do that.

Give James a chance to bed in. He hasn't been in it much yet and was gone for just over 2 months to give us a chance to digest the new Martin and therefore the actor wasn't on set filming putting his own spin on Martin. Personally I like Martin but he needs a chance to bed in for everyone to make a proper judgement.

I don't see a problem with him yet. He's barely done anything yet.

He just need a bit more time and his own storyline. Generally I think he's okay.

Problem is Martin was a lacklustre character partly due to being played by a mediocre actor. There was never any charisma or real charm about him. He was a plodder in the Arthur mold but the actor couldn't engender feelings in the audience like Bill did. They can't character change at day 1 but hope the missing dimension of Martin can be found with new actor. Acting alongside Lacey may help.
