What do you make of the new Lumia 640 and 640XL? I'm thinking of getting one as an upgrade from my Moto E.

I have the 830 and really like it, I prefer the OS to Android. The only thing I would recommend you do is check that the main Apps that you use are also available in the Windows store.
Personally I haven't missed any, but, as always, it's different in every case.
The 640 looks good and it comes with a free years subscription to Office 365 which you can also put on your PC.....I'd Go for the XL.

I would be interested in a Windows phone but they seem to be only concentrating on low or middle range phones without introducing any top end models.

Perhaps we'll see something new with Windows 10. They may not want to introduce a high end handset still with WP8.1. Although they would have to release something really special to tempt me. I have Lumia 1520 and it has everything I need.

Both of the Lumias will be a decent upgrade to your Moto E. I have the L830 and it has the same processor and ram and runs great. If I were you I certainly wouldn't sign up to a contract with either of these phones as you may well hate WP and they will not be expensive - if you don't like them you will be able to sell them on without losing to much money. WP bugs me sometimes, particulary the way it handles "multi tasking" but overall I kind of like it. I do carry an Andoid phone as well though.

i bought a lumia 630 to test the water when samsung refused to fix my s3 mini.

very impressed, there are a few apps missing but android was like that once

if they remain a sensible size i might end up with one, although my 630 is fine for now

Interesting thing about the various WP devices is that they're typically quicker in most day to day real world tasks than their Android equivalents, but with slightly slower processors.

The only area where they don't have a top end device is in the imaging department, but that area seems to be generally being ignored by all the manufacturers - they don't care about a no compromise camera, they only want to do something "good enough" (witnessed by the lack of a flash on the iPhones and Android - note that an LED is *not* a flash, it is a camera light).

I will add that my L830 does seem slow compared to my LG G2 but given the inter also that is not surprising.

I had a Lumia and I couldn't stand the Windows os after having an Android os. I'd actually prefer to go without, if Windows was my only choice.

They have announced that they will be launching a new 'Flagship' phone when W10 launches. Probably Q3.
I'll be upgrading to it from my 830 when it does launch. There isn't anything out there to tempt me back to Android or the iPhone. I've owned both and miss neither.

I've had the 920 for 20 months now, for the most part it's been great. Probably be even better if 3 released the Denim update for it. Looking to upgrade when my contract is up in July but not for any phone currently on offer, Android, OIS or Windows, they seem a lacklustre bunch.

Have Windows 10 on my laptop and willing to try on a phone but not my main one. Will wait and see what transpires but if the new phones aren't released at the time of my upgrade then I'll probably hang on with this phone and a sim deal for a while.

This phone was released July 2014 so that's over 8 months since a high end release.

That'll be in time for my next upgrade ....

However I'm after an imaging flagship. If they don't release something that at least equals the 1020, then I'm likely jumping to Android. Will then likely use either my old 808 or 1020 for imaging and bluetooth anything over to the Android device for sharing to social media if/when required.

^^^ or you could buy a nice camera like Sony RX 100 rather than using Lumia 1020 only for photos.

I have an 820 which was "mid range" when launched. I see no reason to change it for another model especially as the model numbering system is totalling baffling to me. I only had the 820 and 920 to choose between and picked the 820 as being more handy-sized for my stubby-fingered hands.

In reality it is over 2 years old as the Icon, which is a Verizon exclusive, is basically the same phone. Verizon wanted exclusivity on this model which delayed the L930 release.

the 930/icon is still classed as a high end device today, Microsoft are waiting for the full release of Windows 10 for Phones until they release a new device.

I already have a DSLR .... but I'd be likely to just use the 808, which gives about 95% of the image quality of the RX100, with considerably more convenience - can readily send an image via bluetooth to my primary phone for sharing to social media, emailing, etc.

My 808 has a cracked screen, looks a bit knackered, but still takes shots that make the 1020 look mildly pathetic.

Strange tactics. They are losing potential customers who are interested in Windows but want top end phones.

I think they try to appeal to the low end and the middle of the market, try and get the numbers up, rather than the high end. Which is a bit frustrating, but at least there's no temptation for me. I'll just install W10 on my Lumia 1520 and be happy for one more year or two. It's a very good phone, IMO, I can only recommend it, even if it's a bit older now. But it has an SD slot. Take that, Galaxy S6

Yes I'm keeping my 630 and seeing what windows 10 looks like. Like the denim update with cortana. Prefer it to my iphone but that's my opinion 😊

It is considered a high end device for Windows Phone. It doesn't stack up against modern flagships. But as it is now about £300 it is cracking vfm.

Most of the extras on so called 'high end' phones are never used by their owners.
Sales are usually boosted by those that must brag about whatever they happen to have, just because it's the latest, not because they need to use anything on the phone in particular.
Most of the phones will be updated to Denim, then to W10 on launch. So they aren't going to lag behind for at least a couple of years OS wise.
