Used to be true a few years ago, but was just checking the values of trade ins for my 64gb unlocked iPhone 4s and £70 is the Max.

IPhone 3gs 16gb is £10 !

Blimey.

4s is an old phone though and I think that's a reasonable price. Have a look at the value of 5 and 5s and you'll see they are still valuable.

£70 is still a lot, considering that other Android phones of similar age seem to get a fraction of that.

I just tried Envirophone, they'll give me £11 for my old Nexus One (that I don't have), £23 for a Galaxy S2 that I have lying around, or almost £80 for my old 16GB iPhone 4S. All are flagship phones and of similar age. Even my Nexus 5 (a 2013 phone) is only worth £90 according to them.

So I wouldn't say it is a myth. But as people have said, these websites usually only give you a fraction of what you might get for it on eBay or other sites, so it is best to sell direct to someone else. Recycler sites are only good if you need a quick profit and don't care about not getting the best price.

CEX - http://uk.webuy.com

iPhone 4s - 64gb in grade a condition - £61 - 4 year old phone
iPhone 3GS - 16gb in grade b condition - £32 - 6 year old phone

Don't forget the games and apps people want to run are expecting newer and newer phones, so the older ones are less and less valuable. No 4G, only 512mb RAM in the 4s, and only 256mb RAM in the 3GS, and only slow-ish 3G etc etc.

The values of a 4 year and 6 year old phone have dropped. Well that's a shocker!

For your next trick you'll be letting us know grass is green and water is wet.

Back on topic, iPhones do tend to hold their value better than competitor phones. For example a Samsung Galaxy S2 (also 4 years old) would raise at most £42 from CEX and at least £10 from mazuma. However even iPhones will only hold a decent chunk of their value if they are a generation or two old

Crikey, how much would they give me for all the phones since 1996 I don't have....
Hahahaha

That was bad even by my standards wasn't it.

Lol as said that's good, get a used price on a 4-6 year old Android phone.

I sold my iPhone 5S a couple of weeks ago and got £250 for it, which I thought was good

When I claimed by 4+ year old, £75 new. San Francisco was worth about £40 I got ridiculed.
Yes, its closer to £25 now so that's £50 down the drain.

The 4S is three years old (or rather 3 years months 5 maximum but it isn't that long since it was dropped. I got more from CEX f recently or my Nexus S recently than the were going for on Ebay

I think one of the reasons iPhones tend to hold their value better than most is that Apple do tend to provide iOS updates for more generations of older phones than others. Whether or not that is a good idea or not considering the hardware demands of newer versions of iOS is another question of course! The overall build quality is naturally a big factor also.

San Francisco - We Buy cash £11.
iPhone 4 - We Buy cash £36.

So my same age £100 rrp phone loses £89 and 89% whilst the £500 rrp iPhone 4 loses £468 and 92%.

What tended to keep an iPhone value a little bit longer is so many buyers are locked into their £1000 contract, so that £500 was never £500, and usually hundreds more than anything else on the market.

Shove a few hundred onto that iPhone 4 total contract price you obviously hit a 95% + loss. It would be the same for the San Francisco but for the fact that non cash buyers are rare whilst paying cash is simply not the norm for the iPhone.

Has there been a change in the way people have been buying iPhones. I know 4 people with 6/6+ and they were all bought outright direct from Apple, (one on Apple finance that has since been paid off)

The obscene prices the networks charged at release were a significant factor in all those purchase choices and when combined with the freedom gained it was very difficult to justify a £50+ monthly contract.

What was the cost new of a San Francisco and what was the cost of the iPhone (I think you will find the San Francisco held the price better.

The San Francisco sounds an ideal phone for the very price sensitive customer.

Poor timing. When I upgraded to an iPhone 6, my old 5 went to my partner and the 4S he was using got recycled. It got £130, and that's only a few months back. Clearly the value on the 4S has dropped because there are plenty of second hand ones on the market now.
