The Frozen song?
Andy2
13-03-2015
I realise I'm way behind the curve here, but my excuse is that we have no children. I've been hearing lots of people saying that a song from Frozen is driving them mad because it's so catchy and their kids keep singing it all the time etc. As I've just heard someone else say it, I decided to hop onto You Tube and take a listen.
'Let it Go' was mentioned - is that the one? If it is, why are people going barmy over it? I was expecting a lively, melodic song with a great, irresistable chorus, but it's an awful, meandering dirge without a decent hook. It's like a lower-ranking Eurovision entry, it's dreadful. Or have I got the wrong one?

Bl**dy Hell, what a ghastly mess of a song. Thanks.

...I don't quite understand how 'LET IT GO, LET IT GOOOO' isn't a great, irresistable chorus, but fair enough.

I'm often the case that if I hear too much hype over a film/song/TV show etc before I've actually seen it, I'm inevitably disappointed. For me I work at a cinema and remember doing screen checks on Frozen's opening night, and thinking, wow, these songs are kinda cool - but never ever thinking the film would be anywhere near the sensation it was, and Let It Go to capture so many people. I love the whole soundtrack but I think if I first heard it now, after all the hype, I probably would be disappointed.

Well, a good song maybe? The fact that it's for kids shouldn't make any difference.

Within the context of the film, it fits perfectly. It's not necessarily meant to be listened to - and certainly won't have the same effect or impact - as a stand-alone pop song, and shouldn't be judged as such. It'd be like starting with the third film in a trilogy and complaining that it doesn't explain why Han Solo is frozen or what the Matrix actually is. The song's only purpose is to advance the story a bit in a way that young children can understand; no-one's suggesting it's up there with whatever the 'Best Song In The World. Ever' currently is. It's good that you wanted to listen to a song that you'd heard so much about, but did it not occur to you that a song that appeals to a billion eight year-old girls may not be your cup of tea?

If I were you, I'd avoid these similarly beloved Disney songs: Under The Sea, The Circle Of Life, The Bare Necessities and Heigh Ho (It's Off To Work We Go). I don't think they'll give you what you're looking for in a song.

In your opinion, of course. Personally (having the seen the film many times), I think it's a very good song.

And it won an Oscar

OK OK. I've just listened to 'Under the Sea' and it's good - it has an upbeat, happy sound and a solid verse/chorus structure that hooks the ear. 'Bare Necessities' is a brilliant song, again because it is catchy and very singable. But 'Let it Go' is like one of those over-wrought Eurovision ballads that just meanders around and goes nowhere.
I haven't seen the film and of course I'm not an 8-year-old girl, but judging by the hype and non-stop chatter I was expecting something awesome.

Okay OP, I'm weighing in on your side of this argument ( I bet you were beginning to think you were all alone ).

I agree that the song, as all songs from musicals written in the last 10 years or so seem to be, is a boring dirge with no hook and an unremarkable singer performing it.
And you're right - it makes no difference that it's from a kid's film.
Kid's these days are obviously easily pleased. When I was a kid the dreary dirges in musicals ( Where Is Love from Oliver; I Must Have Done Something Good from Sound Of Music; Hushabye Mountain from Chitty...all at least as 'good' as Let It Go, imo ) were just tolerated until the good stuff came on.
Where have all the good songwriters gone. The Sherman Brothers will be turning in their graves.

Personally it's not my cup of tea but there must be something in the melody that kids go mad for, similar to kids TV- I'm not interested in it but kids are mesmerised.

My 16 month old nephew absolutely loves this song and is far too young to understand what the words mean or that it is related to a film so it must be something in the actual song that appeals.

The song isn't actually too bad if you compare it to some other songs aimed at kids out there.
