Something new has turned up in Canary Wharf.

This is Vodafone's TDD spectrum (notice the upload and download frequencies are the same). I put my Voda sim in the phone and it did partially register on it but it can't be used. I wonder if they are testing it.

I know the iPhone 6 is compatible and obviously the Honor 6 is too (I didn't realise it was). Speeds on all networks have tumbled since the iPhone 6 came out. 800MHz is quite slow when it's busy although band 7 2600MHz is still fast. I guess they could take iPhone 6 users and give them their own network as most other phones won't use it. Could someone who knows more about phone specs tell me what others are compatible.

If they are going to use it here that's a lot of spectrum: 20MHz of 2600 TDD, 20MHz of 2600FDD, 10MHz of 800.

Will you get the same speeds as 20mhz fdd on that?

Ah yes, was wondering when Band 38 would start to be used in the UK.

How interesting. thanks for that.
Yes, as lightspeed has asked, could someone who knows explain the advantages and or disadvantages of FDD vs TDD.
I assume that TDD is at a disadvantage?

Not really.

They both have advantages and disadvantages. Also a number of Asian countries, China being the main example, exclusively use TDD LTE perfectly fine.

In fact, there are over 48 networks in 30 countries who have deployed TDD LTE with a further 54 networks due to deploy TDD LTE in the next 2 years. Currently there are 330 networks in 164 countries who have deployed FDD LTE only and 17 networks that have deployed both FDD and TDD LTE.

So might the Chinese phones that people import do band 38? I know they often don't do band 20 800MHz which is a bit of an issue for some. I'm not very up to speed on different phone specs.

That's interesting as it is well publicised on the Vodafone E forum that they have a long term problem with 4G in the Canary Wharf area and have admitted it is capacity issues but are working on a solution to improve it.

I wonder if this is it as would imagine there is a lot of corporate IPhones on Vodafone in that area

There are currently 320 smartphones that support TDD LTE Band 38. However not all these phones support FDD LTE Band 3,7,20.

There really are not any phones in the UK (apart from a few) that offer Band 38 support, let alone TDD LTE support.

Out of all devices that support TDD LTE, approximately 62% of them will support Band 38.

Right, now I've FULLY READ your links..... haha
I can now see it's a bit "swings and roundabouts".
Very interesting reads and more to the point, I understood it!
I liked the bit where some TDD systems can use dynamic bandwidth allocation, changing time slots and duration ratios on the fly depending on the type of traffic.
So general browsing would favour download over upload but if I suddenly filled my Dropbox with 5 Terabytes of mast porn videos it could switch to say, 20% download and 80% upload, on the fly.
Very clever stuff indeed.
Thanks for the info. I'm learning a lot tonight.

Oh ok. I was thinking maybe they might want to cover Chinatown as I see a lot of phones there I don't recognise!

As another example, despite there being 320 smartphones that support TDD LTE Band 38, only 142 of those support both band 38 and band 3. Now imagine how many support Band 38, Band 3, Band 7. Now imagine Band 38, Band 3, Band 7 and Band 20.

Answer, not many.
