I basically want to play 1080p mkv mp4 files either on the tablet using VLC or on a TV via the HDMI cable using VLC as well.

Not really expecting too much from it in terms of CPU use. I have a laptop for that sort of thing.

Native 1080p requires display of 1920x1080 (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080p) and I doubt you will get that on the cheap tablets. Of course the quality of the picture also depends on the quality of the display.

I never play video from a tablet to TV via HDMI as it's a messy solution and means you can't use your tablet while watching the video. Much better to stream directly to the TV. have you thought about something like Chromecast or other media streamer?

Cheers, I'll give Chromecast a go and see if I am happy with the results.

Yes, one cannot expect miracles from the Atom, but unless you want to encode videos or something similarly processor intensive, Atom gives you a reasonable performance. Office runs fine, for example. So no, Windows tablet is not a laptop/desktop replacement, but as a tablet with additional "lightweight" Windows programmes it's pretty competent.

Make sure you get the Eurosport player app. It makes watching the tennis tournaments so much more enjoyable as you can switch courts on it rather than just sticking to what the TV broadcaster is showing.

I've had a horrible experience with the Sony Xperia tablet, it more or less just died on me, thankfully within the first year,

I will make sure to get it when there's some tennis on eurosport next.

I am enjoying having the tablet and it's ease of use.

I haven't found an app where I can watch live tennis on it yet though and I cannot watch it through the internet option either, there's most likely something I'm missing in why I can't but I don't know what!

I'm assuming you're referring to the fact that the warranty was only for one year?

If so that may be another benefit of buying Samsung - the two year warranty. I had assumed that was standard but you seem to be implying that isn't the case.
