One of my favourite bands is a non-mainstream group from North Wales called Future Perfect. I can't put them into a particular genre but their sound is electronic/synthpop type music. They're really good and they have a new album coming out in the next few weeks or so.

Pet Shop Boys - Anything
Depeche Mode - Anything up to and including Violator
Erasure - Anything before "I Say I Say I Say"
New Order - Blue Monday plus others

Imo you can't go wrong with Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode!
