42 inch TV recommendations please - Sony ?

Hi

I've been looking at Sony 42W705 or 829 and will probably wait until 2015 models are out for the prices to reduce. It has got good reviews for pic quality but not sound or slow start up. The 40W605 has got What Hifi best buy. Is this a better buy ? Any other suggestions. My budget is £400 - £450 max. Must have at least 3 x HDMI & optical output for Sony soundbar. Thanks for any advice

Only recently purchased the Sony KDL42W829 . Got it from John Lewis on a price match @£429.
I think the picture quality is very good. Sound is certainly acceptable to me but I am not into highfi etc.
As regards reportedly slow start up, well when I switch on its available for viewing through SKY within a matter of a few seconds. Can't say I notice much difference in time between this and my old samsung LCD.

Thanks for the update. I wonder if people quoting slow start ups have too many apps and take a while loading. Nor sure if I would use too many, maybe amazon or Netflix. Sony do get a good mention for picture quality. Am I right in thinking the 829 has got 3d ? Is that the Only difference between the 829 and 705 ?

Cheers

Never heard of 'slow startup', or really have any idea what they might mean by that? - you can't add apps (as with most sets), but there are absolutely LOAD'S of them.

I've fitted many of these sets though, never had any problems with them, and performance is great.

Cheers Nigel. I've read reviews where it states it can take up to 30 seconds to switch. Is this mot the case then ?

Do you mean to switch ON?, no that's not the case - as with all TV's they take a few seconds to boot-up and do the power up tests.

I've never noticed they take longer than any other set?.

However, when you first install them they take 40 seconds or so to 'initialise', which it tells you on-screen - no idea what it's doing during that time, and I'd love to know All Sony sets seem to do this.

Nigel. Yes I meant to state, switch on but your answer seems more logical. Do you know if there is much difference between the models 42W705 & 42W829 ?

I'm not sure, we install them all the time - but I don't really pay much attention to the model numbers

Some seem to come with 3D glasses, and some don't, but it's pretty well a dead feature anyway.

The 42W829 is the 3D model

I've got the 42W705B and I think it's excellent. The picture quality is great and the smart functions work extremely fast.

As for slow load up, basically the screen comes on almost instantly however it does take around 5 seconds before all of it's functions are available.

I've heard that the remote control for this model is a bit unwieldy as it's badly balanced and very wide, otherwise the TV is great. Sony are trying to make their TV business profitable again but buying in most of the components and outsourcing assemble so it's understandable in a way.

I've never heard any such suggestion, or ever noticed anything like that - and I've installed MANY of them.

There are basically only two widths of Sony remotes, a narrow one, and one a bit wider (but still narrower than many other remotes) - neither are at all unwieldy.
