The gangsters became rich with their music, and therefore became "legitimate business men". Of course, in reality they are still gangsters, but they have enough money to buy themselves an air of legitimacy. It's like after a cult has collected enough money, it becomes a religion.

Old people ruined it just like pop music.

The old gen made their money, their raps became less believable. The new gen are too soft to carry the image.

Not at all, it had its day in the sun now its because to its niche were it belongs. Most of the stuff people hear on the radio and the music tv channels is nothing more than pop hop.

Same with the "nu metal" phase at the early 2000s, ask any metal fan how much they like Linkin Park or if they are excited about the new POD album and they would most likely just explode in rage.

What passes for a genre in the mainstream is just pop music with a slight leaning.
