Yes you can. The mobile is yours from day one. As long as you keep up payments on your monthly tariff then there is no problem

I think you need to look at the small print. I assume as you have 18 months to go you are in a 24 month contract. Did you pay for the phone upfront or was it 'free'? If it was 'free' with your plan I would imagine the phone is not yours but this is something that you need to see the small print of your contract before making a decision.

Unless you're on EE. They retain ownership of the phone for the first few months on some of their new contracts.

But surely if you stopped paying the bill (it does happen) then the phone would get blocked and the buyer extremely annoyed.

Further, I assume you're not on O2 Refresh?

iirc (ex mobile industry employee) the sim gets barred, handset only gets barred if lost/stolen or reported as such

the majority of phones that are barred after being sold are because the seller told their insurer that their phone was lost/stolen

I have a friend who did this (partly their fault for doing the usual "cancel the direct debit and all the problems go away" misunderstanding, partly EE mis-selling the contract in the first place) - the SIM was killed but the phone was never barred, which surprised me. I don't know if EE have since tried to get the cost of the phone back though

i was planning on buying a phone sim free and carrying on with my old contract. the phone was "free" I would keep up the payments on it. I just want a different phone.

Then as long as it wasn't on some lease/refresh deal where you don't own the phone, it should be fine.

At worst they'll just go after you for the money if you stop paying the monthly fee

But surely it would be barred by O2 of he was on the refresh contract and failed to pay for it under the credit agreement.
