I think you need to look at the small print. I assume as you have 18 months to go you are in a 24 month contract. Did you pay for the phone upfront or was it 'free'? If it was 'free' with your plan I would imagine the phone is not yours but this is something that you need to see the small print of your contract before making a decision.

Yes you can. The mobile is yours from day one.

But surely if you stopped paying the bill (it does happen) then the phone would get blocked and the buyer extremely annoyed.

the majority of phones that are barred after being sold are because the seller told their insurer that their phone was lost/stolen |

i was planning on buying a phone sim free and carrying on with my old contract. the phone was "free" I would keep up the payments on it. I just want a different phone.

At worst they'll just go after you for the money if you stop paying the monthly fee |

I have a friend who did this (partly their fault for doing the usual "cancel the direct debit and all the problems go away" misunderstanding, partly EE mis-selling the contract in the first place) - the SIM was killed but the phone was never barred, which surprised me. I don't know if EE have since tried to get the cost of the phone back though
