NAS and Humax 2000T won't talk

I am probably being stupid but for the life of me I cannot get this to work. I have a Humax 2000T and a Buffalo Linkstation LS-QVL and I just cannot get them to talk at all.

I have them both connected to a BT Homehub 3 (along with a plethora of other technology).

I go into media and press (I think) blue to change the location to "network" and it just sits on connecting never actually doing so. It does not give me any options here. I thought that my NAS just was being awkward with everything (doesn't like the xbox 360 either) and admitted defeat.

That was until yesterday, I have a rasberry pi with Kodi installed that is also connected to the homehub and tv which I use for talking to the NAS. I didn't know that it was turned on and I accidentally hit to connect to the network whilst using the hummy. It straight away found the pi and within its menus I found the server and could watch anything on it through the humax box no problem. When I then turned the pi off, I could no longer access the NAS.

If it is of any consequence, in a menu somewhere on the hummy I have ftp server enabled. I can also connect to the humax portal and watch iplayer with no problems.

Am I missing something blindingly obvious to make the humax box and my NAS talk without the step of turning the pi on first? Any suggestions/advice on how to get them talking would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have Content Sharing enabled on the Humax (Menu>Settings>System>Internet Settings>Content Sharing)?

Thanks Martin, apologies for the time it has taken to reply (flu sucks).

Yes, content sharing is on.
