Text contact on android - way too many!

I have an issue with text contacts in android. My phone seems to retain every frigging email and number I've contacted so I have to scroll through dozens of names and emails to get the right contact!
Yet my gmail and phone contacts are neat and concise!
How can I fix this?

What phone do you have and text messaging app are you using?

The generic one. But have just switched to chompsms and no more hundreds of silly contacts, just the ones in my address book!
