Yes I'm getting that a lot with Family Guy.

I don't know if this applies to anyone else but I am seriously calling into question whether having the snappiest device on the market completely up to date with all the latest bells and whistles really is the way to go. Or do we get blinded into these things by the glossy rhetoric.

Like many others, I have a Nexus 7 [2012] which I loved but again like many others it must have the latest version of Android I can possibly get while the going is good and it becomes obsolete by not getting the latest x.x.1 update!!!

The result is, I now have a Nexus 7, updated to 5.1 which admittedly is better that 5.0.2. However, it still is no longer as snappy as it first was. Yes, I've cleared the cache and factory reset etc. as recommended on all the various forums.

Then at the weekend my OH asked me what exactly was wrong with my now 3 year old Motorola 10" Xoom sitting in the box in the cupboard. I had to admit rather red faced that I had stopped using it as Google had taken it off the OTA updates after 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update and that was just not good enough for me despite the excellent 10" screen.

I'm trying to keep this short. We got the Xoom out, charged it and started it up. I had factory reset it before putting it away but soon had it up and running with all the same apps as on my Nexus 7. Google Now works a treat and all the material design apps such as calendar etc. are zipping along. I use OneNote a lot and that actually seems to work better than on the Nexus. I also have to admit I just love the space on the 10" screen. I will try to be balanced and say if there is a downside to all this, it's probably the weight. The Xoom never was the lightest tablet on the market, even for three years ago but we are talking about 75g heavier I think.

Other advantages are it's 32Gb on board memory and 32Gb microSD slot [not available on the iPad of the time]. I can't even genuinely say I miss Lollipop [still have it anyway on my Nexus 5, which seems to swim along with anything chucked at it!]

So after this long diatribe I think what I've learned since the weekend is this: Do we really need the latest gizmo with the latest OS? Finally, the battery life on the Xoom even after all this time is unbelievable.

I only upgrade if the jump makes a difference.

I went from an Advent Vega to the Nexus 7 2012. Which was a much better device in terms of display quality, which is the main reason I wanted a tablet, so that I could show videos and photos. The Advent Vega had poor screen angles so I couldn't really show people videos if they were to the side of me.

I didn't go from the N7 2012 to the N7 2013 because I didn't think the jump was enough.

My next jump in terms of Tablets will probably be a 10in Win 10 tablet.

I agree. For me since the weekend the Xoom is doing exactly the same job for me as the Nexus but better. So, I really don't know what my next jump will be. Probably nothing at all until the Xoom really does start to have problems with app updates.

Same here - Vega was okay in its day, but the 2012N7 was a revelation at the time. Since then the various Android updates have generally felt like a retrograde step each time.

I'm keeping the N7 for some games, but thats about it.

I also have an 8" W8.1 tablet, which feels way better - and interestingly, the benchmarks back that up. Compare browser benchmarks between Chrome on W8.1 and Chrome on the Hudl2 (both with the same processor) and W8.1 is about twice as fast.

I can't see the point in doing the "up"grades when there are obvious issues with them, and the original version works just fine anyway.

.”

Yes the Android OS 'upgrades' seem to have got worse and worse.

What I want from an OS upgrade is a faster, sleeker system, not a bug ridden slow down.

Yet they always seem to be adding more and more crap to OS's instead.

After almost binning it and doing numerous factory resets . I tried a hard reset where you boot into recovery mode and wipe all user data . The difference after doing this has been frankly staggering .Hope this helps someone .

Definitely faster after doing a hard reset but getting random restarts , BBC iplayer closes immediately before getting to main screen .

Have you updated iPlayer and media player?
I have just tried it. Failed the first 2 times but OK after that.

For a while I thought Apple were doing the same; iOS 7 was slower on my 4S than iOS6. The initial release of iOS8 was dire, but as of 8.2, its pretty slick.

The updates to WP on my 1020 have been consistently good.

A good few updates to my W8.1 tablet since I bought it, and its still running as good as the day I bought it.

Googles "updates" for their own product have been varying degrees of rubbish. They really do need to step up their game - not everyone has the latest spec hardware to make these things fly ....

Yes for me the idea of an OS is that it should require a high spec machine to run.

The whole point of an OS for me is that is runs as sleak and lean as possible, letting the programs take the strain if they need to.

After waiting for over 5 mins for chrome to appear and be usable, I had to wipe the cache partition again and it is OK now.
Seriously thinking about rooting and putting an earlier ROM on it.
