Problems With Panasonic As720
Paperhouse
19-03-2015
My new TV with built in Freesat HD and Freeview HD arrived yesterday.

So far two problems:

1. Can't listen to previously broadcast radio on BBC iPlayer; despite the on screen advise to the contrary.

2. Can't set a programme reminder. When I click on a programme in the guide, there is then no option to set a reminder. Only option are 'About' and 'Cancel'.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

What is the actual model number of the TV? I can't find any Panasonic TV range that includes AS720 in the model name.

I do beg your pardon; It's an AS740. TX-42AS740 to be exact.

OK.

1/ What if any error message do you get? It could be a limitation of iPlayer, the Panasonic app or some broadcast restriction (eg a rights issue preventing the BBC replaying the programme)

2/ According to the manual if you press OK on a future timed programme in the guide you should get a pop-up to select either Record or Remind. I cannot see any mention in the manual anywhere of a menu showing About and Cancel options? Plenty of mentions of an Exit option in various menus but not Cancel.

Unfortunately due to the way Panasonic do their on-line manuals I can't link directly to it but if you poke TX-42AS740 into

http://www.panasonic.eu/Downloads/en_GB/popup.html

and click Search you'll find the manuals. There appear to be two variants B and E but as far as I can see the timer functions are the same for both.

The BBC stopped support for radio on iPlayer on AV devices recently (as opposed to the browser version on your computer/tablet/phone). Panasonic have not got round to updating the messages on their TV sets by the sounds of it.

Good shout that man.

I knew that the Beeb had been messing about with iPlayer but lost track of all the who what when and where's of the fine detail.

Yes I know what the manual says, but the pop up menu does not have either Record or Remind. Only About (to get a description of the programme) or Cancel (to return to the programme guide).

Hmmmm

Sounds like Panasonic may have updated the firmware but not the manual.

Do you have a USB hard drive that has nothing important on it? If so it might be interesting to plug the drive into the telly and see if that changes anything. By the way the TV may want to format the drive hence why you shouldn't use one with any important data on it, just in case you don't have the option to cancel the format!

But maybe with a disk detected on the USB port it might then give the Record/Reminder options?

No I don't have a USB hard drive; and it shouldn't be necessary to plug in additional hardware simply to get the basic functions of the TV to work.

Afternoon. The reason you do not get the option to set a reminder is because the TV us currently using the Freetime TV guide, this does not support the reminder system from what I can see.
To change this go to the menu, then setup, then display settings, then change the TV guide option to Panasonic instead of Freetime.
This will then bring up the normal Panasonic TV guide that is A) far quicker & more pleasant to use, and B) allows the reminder to work.
If you still want to use the Freetime guide it can be accessed from the Home button and the "Digital TV" screen.

Thanks Skinj. I had almost come to that conclusion myself. I'll give it a try over the weekend. Is it me, or are user guides somewhat lacking these days? Only had this TV for a couple of days and I'm already missing the simplicity of a Sky box.

The freetime guide is awful. It's dreadfully slow and moving backwards to the catchup TV section is not intuitive at all. We advise most of our customers to just use the normal guider and the dedicated catchup services instead.
Th Panasonic guide is fairly much the same as the Sky Guide. just move the yellow box, press ok then (i think) up/down to choose to remind or record. there is no series link that I'm aware of but it's a TV in reality not a dedicated recorder.

I think skinj may have already solved your problem, but I'm wondering how you record a programme, if there's no option.

The TV defaults to record and can be changed to remind. This only appears when not using the freetime guide though!

Thanks to all, I'm now up and running. But........................

I've connected the TV to my DVD player via an HDMI cable. Although the TV automaticly shows a DVD when I use the player; it doesn't revert to TV mode when I turn the DVD palyer off. Is this normal?

And I think I'll get an ethernet cable because the iPlayer buffers from time to time using a wireless connection.

Using an HDMI cable, I have linked the Panasonic 42-AS720B TV to a Panasonic DMR-EZ47VEB DVD recorder.
When I switch on the DVD recorder, the TV remains in broadcast mode.
When I play a DVD, the TV automatically switches to HDMI.
When I turn of the DVD recorder, the TV remains in HDMI mode.
Should it not revert to broadcast mode?

Is it because the HDMI socket on the DVD recorder is lebelled 'HDMI out'?

If the HDMI on the recorder was labelled IN then it wouldn't work with the telly. If you think about it for a second it will become obvious why you connect the OUT on the recorder to the IN on the telly

The problem is HDMI control. The recorder is obviously sending a control signal to the TV when the disk starts playing, or even as you load the disk. The TV sees this and switches over to the HDMI input.

However at the end of the disk either the recorder is not sending a "play end" command to the TV or the TV is simply ignoring it and doing nothing. Or it could simply be the designers of the TV firmware didn't put in any code to make it switch back to TV mode in the first place.

I've actually turned HDMI control off on all my bits of kit because it is a royal pain in the wotsits. It tries to be too clever and only ends up making you want to chuck the kit out of the window!

In my case it was prompted by the simple act of playing an audio CD in my Blu-Ray player. The player sees the disk being loaded and sends a command to the TV to turn on and switch to HDMI in. But it's an audio CD, don't need the telly. So I turn the TV off which sends a command to turn off the Blu-Ray. No prizes for guessing what happens when I turn the Blu-Ray back on!

So now I leave HDMI control turn off so that I rather than my kit is in control. It does mean I have to tell the TV what input it has to be switched to to watch a Blu-Ray disk or a PVR recording. But at least I know it's going to work properly (if my few remaining functioning brain cells are on the ball ) rather than the kit trying to second guess what I'm trying to do and ending up getting it all wrong!

Thanks chrisjr. I guess this is something that I can live with.
