Should it not revert to broadcast mode?
Is it because the HDMI socket on the DVD recorder is lebelled 'HDMI out'?”
If the HDMI on the recorder was labelled IN then it wouldn't work with the telly. If you think about it for a second it will become obvious why you connect the OUT on the recorder to the IN on the telly
The problem is HDMI control. The recorder is obviously sending a control signal to the TV when the disk starts playing, or even as you load the disk. The TV sees this and switches over to the HDMI input.
However at the end of the disk either the recorder is not sending a "play end" command to the TV or the TV is simply ignoring it and doing nothing. Or it could simply be the designers of the TV firmware didn't put in any code to make it switch back to TV mode in the first place.
I've actually turned HDMI control off on all my bits of kit because it is a royal pain in the wotsits. It tries to be too clever and only ends up making you want to chuck the kit out of the window!
In my case it was prompted by the simple act of playing an audio CD in my Blu-Ray player. The player sees the disk being loaded and sends a command to the TV to turn on and switch to HDMI in. But it's an audio CD, don't need the telly. So I turn the TV off which sends a command to turn off the Blu-Ray. No prizes for guessing what happens when I turn the Blu-Ray back on!
So now I leave HDMI control turn off so that
I rather than my kit is in control. It does mean I have to tell the TV what input it has to be switched to to watch a Blu-Ray disk or a PVR recording. But at least I know it's going to work properly (if my few remaining functioning brain cells are on the ball

) rather than the kit trying to second guess what I'm trying to do and ending up getting it all wrong!
