Well from last episode we know that The Nestene Consciousness was involved (Or Autons, if you like).

He is not allowed to do that.

Wasn't that explained in episode 1?

I don't think it was explained, as I was wondering if he could have gone back and saved Jabe.

Hey - I'm only 26. I can only remember bits and pieces of Doctor Who, but the majority of my memories are all about aliens invading earth, in the present, with the occasional venture in the tardis to their homeworlds to finish them off.

If the whole series becomes just another american sci-fi show where everything that happened this week is totally unconnected to next week's episode, I don't think I'll bother watching it. Especially if they're all just special effects showcases like tonight's episode.

”

I'm 26 as well...and your memory is mistaken.

The Doctor's always travelled and generally doesn't go around looking for aliens to 'finish off' - like Jim Kirk or something.

It's not really his style.

Have they?
What's been said?

If they have been, it shows that they fear Doctor Who.

Excellent, didn't think the BBC could bring the show into the 21st century - but I'm impressed.

Like an earlier poster I'm sick of the reality / game show / talent show garbage that has been churned out in the last 5 years on a Saturday night - hope the Dr keeps good viewing figures so that BBC/ITV might consider an new genre - entertainment !!!

PS Good job the pope didn't pass away during the show - there would have been a BBC dilemma?

Again, not a bad episode. Much better special effects than last week. The music is awful though, it tries too hard, and can be horribly sentimental. Call me snob, but CE's relentlessly northern accent is beginning to grate. It was a nice novelty at first, but now it feels very out of place.

The war would have had to have been with another time travelling race to wipe out the Time Lords completely.

Anyone else thinking the Daleks, in revenge for McCoy 'destroying' Skaro? Maybe leading into the two-parter Dalek finale when he goes back to try and stop them?

It would be possible if they use the concept of "Time lines".

I really really wanted to like Doctor Who. I was a big fan of the Tom Baker era when I was growing up, and I ve watched every single episode made since 'Destiny of the Daleks.' I was perhaps more excited than most when I heard that Doctor Who had been recommissioned, and even more excited when I heard that Russell Davies was writing the new series, but... oh my god... its really awful! The dialogue, the plots, and the acting are atrocious. Great special effects though for a UK programme - much better than 'Hex.' Maybe I ve been spoiled by 'Buffy' and 'Angel'..... Shame!

Novelty? I speak like that all the time. Most Doctors have spoken with an accent. Was Pertwee's impedent too odd for you as well? McCoy had a peculiar voice too.

Surely that's part of the distinctiveness (is that a word?) for each doctor

Actually, the hints about the "war" and the Doctor being the last Timelord suggest RTD has been taking notes from Babylon 5 and classic Doctor Who.

The reason Babylon 5 is regarded by many as the best US sci-fi show is because, unlike Star Trek and others, it had an ongoing story arc, with many of the episodes interconnected (a dream sequence shown in season two of B5 then really happening in season 4!).

What the mystery of the "war" suggests is that RTD has a story arc set-up, and will keep viewers guessing.

I assumed the sightly dodgy CG stuff was intentional. It fits with the style - kind of like the modern day equivilant of cardboard sets and rubber monster suits.

Before the series started I did read something where each episode, or pair of episodes woul dall stand alone, but woven through them all is an on going story...I'm guessing the war is the ongoing story. It's probably the best thing for a new series. Keep speople ionterested all the way through, but is still easy for new people to pick up half way through too.

Dr Who is classy tv! I am really enjoying the new series with the excellent scripts, humour and brilliant special effects. This is without doubt one of the best programmes on UK tv at the moment. Well done to the writers and production staff for bringing Dr Who back in such style. It's great to have something sci-fi/fantasy made by British tv

Looking forward to the rest of the series - shame about Ecclestone leaving really...

Altho it was obviously not up to US standards, I thought it was very similar to Farscape in terms of Special FX and make up.

Sorry, but I can't agree with that Farscape is much much better in both the scale and quality of FX and set design. Sadly there is no comparison at all, that I can see.

However, it is worth noting that many of the sets and FX for Farscape (and Trek, etc) could be used over and over again.

I agree with you.
It really looks like Russel T Davies has constructed a world in which the characters inhabit.
It makes the characters more believable if there is a backdrop. It allows the writer to create a reason for why characters behave in the way they do, and do certain things.

And I too think that Babylon 5 was probably the best US scio-fi show. The story arc involving the battle between "Order" and "Chaos" which was the main story, made everything interesting becaue you know everything is leading in a definite direction, and a climax is at the end.

I do hope that Russel T Davies has approached Doctor Who in this way. I think he may well have.
If so, then it's a reasonable compromise for having so mnay 45 minutes self contained stories. Knowing that there is a larger story behind it all makes it more acceptable.
Although there are still 3 two-parters, which is good.

Have to agree...much as I wanted to like it, I think it's complete twaddle. Rearrange these words: Who Jumped The Shark Doctor (Again).
