One year ago today Janine Butcher was found not guilty
EE 20 March 2014 was the episode. It was a continuation of the previous one where Kat was giving her evidence (perjury at that) and marked Janine's last appearance for now. I remember really enjoying it and thought it was such a good exit for her. It was written by Lauren Klee who has worked on a number of EE episodes since 2009 or so. She wrote for the episode where Linda was raped as well as one of the 30th anniversary episodes.
Janine shared some really good scenes with David upon her acquittal. I also liked her brief meeting with Linda, talking about how it was meant to be her as the Vic landlady. IMO it may set the stage for a showdown with the Carters in the future, as the Vic was the one business she could never get her hands on (not to mention that Blades is where Butcher's Joints used to be). Her confrontation with Carol was so good though. I loved how Carol mentioned how she isn't a violent person, etc and that good people like Alice had to take the fall for her lies. Of course that final scene at St Pancras when she was waiting for the Eurostar was such a good reminder of the Janine we all know. The "getting away with murder" line and the doof doof as she had that scheming look on her face when looking at the lottery winner. I remember Twitter going crazy over that last scene. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKfaiSAchdc There was an ambiguity about her character and even what she did next. On one hand, we thought she had finally become a changed woman, retracting her statement and admitting that she stabbed Michael the second time upon hearing about Alice trying to commit suicide. That seemed like a red herring with the last scene. Or, does Janine still like to scheme, but has a heart after all? Or was that last part just a tongue in cheek reference? |

Janine's main motivation for a future return will obviously be The Vic so she'd be on a collision course with Shirley and co. During the 30th anniversary stuff, there was an article asking current EE cast members about their favourite villains. The actors who play Lee, Whitney and Cindy all said Janine, so she's clearly still fresh in minds. But I reckon her character in the future will soften a bit as she now has Scarlett and she showed her compassionate side in the trial when she helped Alice. Charlie is currently in a theatre version of Beautiful Thing alongside the previous Peter Beale actor Thomas Law. |

I'm a big fan of Janine. She was a great character and so well acted. Charlie can say so much with a look. She's a fantastic actress. I'd love for her to return.
