How does KFC get away with a 'secret recipe'?
Surely this contravenes any number of UK and EU laws/regulations on transparency in food. I don't know if it actually IS a secret, but if it isn't it is at least shielded from the public. Isn't this somewhat of an outrage?
Imagine if you went to a supermarket and picked up a box of chicken an on the packaging it say "secret ingredient", I'm fairly sure it wouldn't be allowed, why do KFC ge away with hiding their ingredients or at least not making it public. Surely for purposes of people with food allergies if nothing else they're required by law to reveal precisely what's in it and that public health/interest should come before commercial advantage/ |

All the regulations say is that the ingredients must be listed in order of composition. It says nothing about what the proportions of each are or how they are processed or mixed. That's where the secret lies.

We know it's a secret blend of 11 herbs and spices. IM sure they'll disclose exactly which ones to the relevant authorities if they are particularly keen to know.

Loads of companies have 'secret recipes' Coca Cola keeps theirs in a vault and only a handful of people at any given time know what it is. They also print the ingredients on the side of every can. But the way these contradictory things happen is that they're not required to get over specific- the umbrella words flavouring and spices are all they're required to disclose.

There's a website for secret fast food recipies and the Big Mac sauce is one of them.
I've made it before and it wasn't far off. |

I just mix 'McKennedy's Hamburger Relish' from Lidl with a squirt of mayonnaise. Add some salad and you have a McDonalds. The only problem is finding good thin burgers. I usually buy quarter-pounders, fry them and slice them into two thin burgers. To me, this tastes nicer than one monolithic slab of meat in the middle.
McDonalds balances the flavours of the meat, bread, salad, sauce and cheese very well, not that I eat there more than every eighth blue moon. KFC's mainly all about ginger, salt and white pepper. And soaking the lot on oils, MSG, etc. |
